The Casio x Stranger Things A120WEST-1A is ready for whatever parallel universe you’re enteringFergus Nash
- Casio’s collaboration with Stranger Things brings back the reference A120.
- The A120WEST-1A is full of Stranger Things Easter eggs such as a blinking backlight.
- More A120 references should be released later in the year.
Stranger Things certainly didn’t begin the nostalgic obsession for the 1980s, but it definitely kicked it into another gear. As the Netflix original series drew in younger audiences into its realm of cheesy sci-fi adventures mixed with a good deal of horror, it also introduced them to things like Kate Bush, Metallica, and Casio watches. Rather than just making a special edition of an existing model, Casio have used this opportunity to revive the 1980s reference A120 with the Casio x Stranger Things A120WEST-1A.
It’s more than likely that standard editions of the A120 will be released later on in the year, but this Stranger Things collaboration is a great starting point. The colourful buttons on the dial side are incredibly reminiscent of ‘80s whimsy, while the functions are displayed at the top of the dial for reference. Emerging from beneath the digital display is the silhouette of the series’ demogorgon, sending red vines or energy crackles around the printed areas. Those vines extend to the semi-transparent resin strap and the caseback, showing the thin veil between our dimension and the Upside Down. Another Stranger Things-related Easter egg is the backlight LED, which flickers and rapidly blinks just like the surfacing of a demogorgon in the show. Once lit, you can see the watermark of an upside down Stranger Things logo.
As a watch itself, the A120WEST-1A is about as classic as you can get for a vintage-derived Casio. The case is a 33.5mm x 40.7mm rectangle, with a thickness of 9.4mm. Its resin construction means that it weighs only 25g, although the case’s chrome coating gives the impression of a metal watch. It has a chronograph that can measure 1/10th of a second, a daily alarm, and an annual calendar which will only need adjusting on a leap year. It may not have a lot of the other features of modern Casios like multiple time zones or solar charging, but realistically this is a watch to tell you the current time and that’s about all it needs to do. The movement will run for approximately three years on a CR1616 battery, although that can be affected by how often you show off your blinking backlight.
