HOW TO: Follow the Time+Tide team at Baselworld 2018

Felix Scholz

The Time+Tide contingent on the ground at Baselworld 2018 is bigger, badder and more Basel-y than ever before. What this means, aside from unlocking #squadgoals achievements left, right and centre is more watches, coming at you in more ways than ever before. At the fundamental level the best way to stay up to speed is the site (that you’re currently reading), our YouTube channel, Facebook page and Instagram account. If you’ve bookmarked, subscribed, liked and followed them you’re already going to get a pretty thorough overview of Basel’s latest and greatest. But if you want to go backstage you can always follow the team’s individual accounts, that offer a slightly more personal take on the biggest watch fair of the year. Go on, you know you want to.

What sort of stuff can we expect to see on your feed?
Lots of watches, especially that I spot around the fair on the wrists of attendees. You can also expect quite a few wristrolls – you’ve been warned.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
Generally speaking, I’m really hoping to see some of the big brands bust out new collections, and break away from what they’re currently doing. That, and reissues. I love a good reissue.

Judging on recent form, you may not see much at all. Ever since I started Time+Tide I’ve done so much watch and T+T related posting that I can’t remember how to do it like a normal person. But looking back through old posts I take pictures of things that catch my eye from my travels, fanboy pics of my wife and beer. I will commit right here though to take compromising shots of the team in full flight at Basel this year. That will be fun.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
Always curious to see what Rolex pull out of the bag and to ride that monster hype wave; also Tudor, an interesting time for them. Patek seem to be playing the game more and more each year, there could be some surprises there.

Watches, watches and more watches! Plus an exclusive perspective on a first-timer at Basel, having recently joined the Time+Tide team.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
Brand new releases aside, I’m particularly looking forward to watch spotting at the event. It’s the one time of year where brand ambassadors, executives, media and watch lovers converge.. I’m expecting to see some weird, wonderful and rare wrist accessories!

What sort of stuff can we expect to see on your feed?
Baselworld through the lens of a first-timer.  I’ll be trying to take in as much of the fair as possible, focusing on anything (and everything) I can get my hands on.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
I’m hoping this is a year for innovation, with plenty of brand new designs, movement technologies, etc…more than just new bezel colours and dial variations – unless maybe it’s a stainless steel coke.  Beyond that, I’m looking forward to handling the types of pieces we don’t usually come across here in the land down under.

Much as I’d like to buck the trend and NOT say watches, I think we all know that’s not really going to happen. Having said that I’ll try to continue to show a bit of what it’s *actually* like at the fair, the quiet moments, the glamorous moments and even one or two of the weird moments. Oh, and bling. I’m pretty into bling.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
It’s not the answer you’re expecting –but honestly – all my international watch journalist and industry buddies. I’m also hoping to see some strong value offers. Oh and Rolex – I’ve got absolutely no idea what to expect from those guys.

Justin Mastine Frost (@justinmfrost)

What sort of stuff can we expect to see on your feed?
Indies, obscurities, unconventional weirdness from the big-box brands if and when it appears, and anything colorful (not including sparkly stone-riddled things). It’s my usual M.O. as you all know, and I’ll be posting heavily from appointment to appointment.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
What I’m hoping for versus what I’m expecting are two distinctly different things. I’m hoping to be surprised, to be wowed, to see brands actually stepping outside their usual safety net and delivering product that actually pushes our wonderful industry forward. What I’m expecting from most is more of the same—more contenders in the entry level, more dial variations on the classics, more “vintage inspired” as the trend that refuses to die… This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it seems to be what is working well for most of the established players in the industry, but I’m holding out faint hope that this year will bring more energy, optimism, and advancement.

Sandra Lane (@thesandralane)

What sort of stuff can we expect to see on your feed?
I’ll be spending plenty of time with the Indies (where my heart really lies) as well as the big brands, hunting for superb movements and finely crafted dials – so I can play with my new macro lens. I’ll also be looking for interesting watches that fit my wrist – which doesn’t necessarily mean only “ladies” watches.

What are you most anticipating/hoping to see at the fair?
As well as plenty of material for the above, I anticipate seeing some brands present a strong offer of watches that offer real value (i.e. plenty of substance) in relation to price. Fortunately, the industry is realising that this is what real people want. I’m also hoping to see a restaurant/bar bill that doesn’t require taking a second mortgage to pay for it.
