Borna Bošnjak

With an abundance of vintage charm and period-correct proportions, the new Hanhart 417ES 1954 is a faithful reintroduction of the mid-century original. Whether you look at its clean two-register layout or the knurled bezel, the connection to the 417ES of old is clear, making it obvious that Hanhart didn’t want to muddy the water with any unnecessary redesigns. The details that have been improved are subtle, and make the 417ES a better watch overall. You can read our in-depth review here, or check out the video overview below.

New and subtly improved

The most apparent improvement is in the dial layout. Whereas the original had a bit of a “that’ll do” air about it, Hanhart doesn’t take chances with the new one. The sub-dials move closer together, giving the printed minute track more breathing room. The 2, 4, 8 and 10 o’clock markers are also more comfortable, with just the right amount of spacing.

Not everything needed improving, however. A favourite touch of mine on many vintage watches are the small curiosities in the printing – a notable one of which is the open 6. Often found on dials and date wheels of old, I’m glad Hanhart didn’t “improve” on this design. There’s also a wonderfully curved tip to the chronograph seconds and minutes hand, as they give way to the box-domed sapphire crystal.

Being a sporty mechanical chronograph, ample wrist presence is expected and welcomed (within reason). The Hanhart executes this perfectly, as the watch is only 13.5mm in height, inclusive of tall crystal. This grows to about 15.4mm with the included bund strap, though I’m happy to report that it wears wonderfully even without the leather cuff piece. Compact 39mm x 45.7mm dimensions will ensure wearability on a multitude of wrists.
