  • The Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition features a date window in which Miss Piggy’s ex makes a monthly appearance
  • The watch itself is based on the 39mm titanium ProPilot X Calibre 400
  • Oris wanted to ensure the collaboration didn’t overpower the overall watch design

Growing up, I learned a British superstition that you’re meant to perform at the beginning of each month. According to some age-old tradition, on the first day of a new calendar month, the very first words that you say aloud are meant to be “white rabbits”. Folkloric wisdom claims that this specific utterance is meant to bring you good luck – a useful commodity in these troubled times. Apparently, RAF bomber aircrews during World War II also believed that saying this phrase upon waking would give them protection. I mention all this because Oris have just released a watch that offers an amphibious alternative.  The Oris ProPilot X Kermit Edition ditches the rabbits in favour of Fozzie Bear’s best pal.

The watch itself is based on the 39mm titanium ProPilot X Calibre 400 with a lime-green dial and date window at 6 o’clock. Except that on the first day of every month, the date window will be filled with the beaming mug of Kermit the Frog.

“’Kermit Day’ is all about not taking life too seriously, having some fun.” Oris explain. “We’re seriously unserious about it.”

It’s hard to argue with that sentiment. But what’s also nice about this collaboration is the fact that it’s quietly unobtrusive. The ProPilot X Calibre 400 is an interestingly designed watch forged from smoky grey titanium that makes the green dial really pop. The sizing is spot-on, too, as it’s 39mm wide and 47mm lug to lug. Kermit may be making a scene-stealing monthly cameo here, but he’s not overpowering the watch and this was a deliberate ploy, insists Oris creative director Ken Laurent.

“We could have put a big Kermit the Frog emoji on the dial,” he says. “Some might have done that because they want their most important collaborations to be in-your-face, to scream. But we didn’t want that. We wanted something more humble that would respect the product.”

I have to admit, I’m not usually a fan of watches that incorporate cartoon characters (sorry Popeye, Snoopy, Charlie Brown et al). They remind me of a horrible boss I once had who used to wear Mickey Mouse ties to show what a zany character he was. But despite this po-faced stance, I love the restraint of Oris’ execution here. If I owned this watch, I’d definitely get a feel-good kick out of Kermit’s monthly appearance. Plus, of course, it would remind me to say “white rabbits”.
