  • The Chanel J12 Eclipse Boxed Set pairs together seven J12 watches
  • Arranged from left to right, they show an encroaching shadow moving across the watch
  • The bezel and dial are set with baguette-cut ceramic rings for a diamond effect with less sparkle

The Chanel J12 has been an undisputed icon since its release in 1999, overcoming any complaints about their heritage as a fashion brand through the revolutionary use of ceramic and disrupting the gendered divide of watch design. With beauty and stoicism in equal measure, Chanel have decided to celebrate the monochromatic colour schemes of the J12 with the Chanel J12 Eclipse Boxed Set, quite outrageously packaging seven watches together that each represent a different phase of the moon.

Chanel J12 Eclipse Boxed Set

If you were determined, you could classify this as one of the most convoluted moon phase display watches ever made, simply by wearing whichever watch happens to correlate closest to the correct phase. That said, I don’t think that Chanel really had that in mind when designing this set. Sometimes the fun and excitement of opulence is not asking whether one should, and rather saying yes whenever one could, no matter the expense. On either side of the collection are pure white or black J12 watches, although the bezel and dial are set with baguette-cut ceramic rings that give off a surreal diamond-effect without too much distracting sparkle, Chanel once again showing off their mastery of materials. Viewing from left to right, you can see how the shadow slowly creeps across the entire watch from case to dial and bracelet, just like a lunar eclipse.

Chanel J12 Eclipse Boxed Set

Released during Watches & Wonders 2023, the Chanel J12 Eclipse Boxed Set is made up of 38mm watches with a 46.6mm lug-to-lug length  that almost every wrist could comfortably wear. It’s paired with the automatic Calibre 12.1 movement that Chanel introduced in 2019, with a smooth 4Hz sweep, a 70-hour power reserve, and COSC certification for an accuracy range within +6/-4 seconds per day.
