Shakira slams her footballer ex Gerard Piqué and his new girlfriend: “You swapped a Rolex for a Casio”

Watches have long permeated pop culture, but recently we may have seen the first horological burn in a song. After a decade together, retired Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué and pop music icon Shakira separated – and it was by no means a friendly break-up. In the wake of the split there has been a fair bit of drama with accusations of Piqué cheating on Shakira at the forefront. And this week the drama hit a new peak, and took a horological turn. Shakira took a page out of Taylor Swift’s playbook, turning to her music to express how she not only feels about Piqué, but also his new girlfriend as well.

In a three and half minute clip uploaded to YouTube three days ago, which currently has 116m views, Shakira does not hold back. There is nothing subtle about the song, entirely devoted to reminding the world how much of a “She-Wolf” she is and how little she thinks of Piqué these days. Plenty of insults and comments fill each lyric, but the one line that really caught the attentions of watch geeks was: “You swapped a Rolex for a Casio” in reference to herself versus Piqué’s new 23-year-old girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti. Don’t worry, if you click on the above you do not need to hear the full track. We’ve skipped to the good stuff for you.

As much as it was Shakira’s intention to burn Piqué, it would seem both he and Casio have capitalised on all the attention.

Piqué is seen in the video above: “Casio has sent us wrist watches. We reached a sponsorship agreement with Casio, the King’s League struck a deal with Casio.” before proceeding to hand out watches to his fellow King’s League participants.

Casio also had their fun on Twitter, showing they are both good sports and strategic with their marketing, captioning their post: “Today we got quite a few notifications for a mention of Casio in a song. Casio watches and keyboards and calculators are for life #Harder, #Better, #Faster, #Stronger” suggesting their watches have a longer shelf life than her relationship with Piqué.

I have no stake in this game whatsoever, all I am left with is the question: is this the best horological reference in a diss track of all time? Or even the first of its kind?
