Aside from the FIFA video game series, I can’t say, as an American, that I am overly tuned into what the majority of the world refers to as “football”. But when Apple TV debuted their now wildly successful series Ted Lasso, one character became an instant favourite: Roy Kent. Played by writer and actor Brett Goldstein, when you dig past his bursts of expletives and resting angry face, Roy is deep down a very sweet and kind character who, like an onion, has many layers to explore. Some of the most heartwarming moments of the show are when Roy deviates from his tough demeanour, whether in his touching conversations with his niece or when he reveals his softer side with (spoiler alert!) girlfriend Keeley. Goldstein really nails the part, an unexpected surprise when you consider he originally was only meant to be a writer on the show. But fortunately fate intervened and now I could never imagine anyone else playing Roy on the show.

With the surging popularity of the show, the Ted Lasso ensemble have certainly found themselves at many awards shows of late – notably earning 20 nominations and seven wins at the 2021 Emmy awards. One of the seven wins, in fact, went to Brett Goldstein himself for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. Now fully immersed in the spotlight, Goldstein was most recently spotted last week at the Critics Choice Awards sporting a Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Light on his wrist while attending the ceremonies.

The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Light displays the brand’s willingness, as well as their capability to, explore cutting-edge materials for their timepieces. Most know the Laureato as a stellar alternative to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus, but Girard-Perregaux goes where Patek Philippe, nor Audemars Piguet, have yet to explore.

The Laureato Absolute Light has a 30 metre water-resistant case, 44mm in diameter, that is primarily made of sapphire with some titanium elements as well. This allows the watch to be both very light and very scratch-resistant. It is also paired with a black rubber strap for optimal comfort as well. With the transparency of sapphire, the Laureato Absolute Light’s dial follows suit with an openworked movement that is visible from all sides of the timepiece. The in-house calibre GP01800, also found in 42mm Laureato watches, has been re-worked to be an openworked movement – with an openworked automatic rotor as well being manufactured in solid gold. It also takes on a much more modern finish, with blackened and satinated openworked bridges that are nicely bevelled on their edges. On the technical front, the movement offers a solid 54 hours of power reserve – not record setting, but a respectable amount nonetheless.
