Forget the dodgy moustache, Chris Evans sports an intriguing watch in The Gray Man
Ricardo SimeIt’s been more than three years since Chris Evans ended his time as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic universe. The character, considered a moral compass in the movies, has become the highlight of the actor’s career. So much so that he has become synonymous with the good-guy image. Yet, in the years since, Evans has leaned heavily into darker, more villainous roles. First as the deceitful Hugh Ransom Drysdale in Knives Out and now as the well-dressed baddie Lloyd Hansen in the recent blockbuster The Gray Man.
A few days ago, I decided to check out his latest voyage into the dark side. And while it was fun seeing the actor’s range, what really caught my eye was his wardrobe selection. Knitted polos, ankle cut pants and loafers make a pretty good villain outfit. The cherry on top though for my keen watch-collecting eye was what he wore as his watch. A little known Hamilton tonneau-shaped watch called the American Classic Boulton Quartz.
On one hand, I wasn’t surprised at all to see a Hamilton make its way into the movie. The brand has a knack for being on the big screen. What was surprising was the choice of this particular reference. Out of a catalogue full of dozens of watches, this is one of a small subset of those in a tonneau style. Furthermore, in the Boulton family, this is the smaller, quartz variant. And the only one in PVD yellow.
The more I thought about it though, the more I realized how this watch, paired well with Chris Evans’ character. His wardrobe has a very 1950s / 1960s vibe and at that time, gold tonneau-shaped watches were quite popular. They were also traditionally sized (read smaller). In fact, the Hamilton Boulton family of watches, first introduced in 1941, was an extremely popular and well-selling model for the brand during this time period. When taking this all into consideration, it’s no wonder why the costume designer for The Gray Man picked this smaller (27mm x 31.6mm), gold toned watch to complete Lloyd Hansen’s look.
