Any time a design risk is taken, people could turn one way or another. The Tudor Royal is undoubtedly their most visually distinctive collection, and as such is has divided people into those who love its brave embrace of 1970s kitschiness and those who aren’t capable of doing the same. With two new dial colours across four different sizes, the Tudor Royal digs even deeper into the funky retro love for an ultimately refined watch.

Bringing together the popularity of integrated bracelet sports watches and a general revival of 1970s design trends, the Tudor Royal brings an entirely different approach to watchmaking than its vintage-homage range of Black Bays. The bezel is loud, with alternating grooves and polish that’s reminiscent of some rare Rolex engine-turned bezels throughout the decades. The case is blocky, with slab sides and sharply-sloped lugs which join onto an integrated bracelet which almost looks like it should be elasticated. Those sporty and almost brutalist features are then contrasted by the glamorous dial, resplendent with Roman numerals, baton hands, and deep sunburst brushing.

The two new colours are sumptuous to say the least, with a two-tone S&G case paired to a chocolate brown hue and the steel model given a slightly dark salmon. Both varieties across all case sizes are also available with diamond hour markers, reserving the Roman numerals to the quarters. The available sizes are 28mm, 34mm, 38mm and 41mm, covering a solid range of wrist sizes. There are no sacrifices made for specifications with the smaller diameter watches, although the movements are not entirely in-house to begin with, being based upon calibers by ETA or Sellita. The upside of this is the affordability, especially amongst the steel models for a lofty Swiss brand.
