How the Meistersinger Singularis Enamel Edition finally won me over

Fergus Nash

Although I am a self-confessed lover of weird things, I could never really put my finger on why I hadn’t fallen for Meistersinger. I’ve always enjoyed their single-handed quirk and charm, and I’ve definitely recommended them to people who are looking for something different in the past, but it wasn’t until the new Meistersinger Singularis Enamel Limited Edition that one of their releases really clicked in my mind. For this exclusive release of only 20 pieces, Meistersinger have fully leaned into the look of an antique instrument.

Presented in the 43mm case of the Singularis, you really get your money’s worth with how much enamel is actually on show. Of that 43mm diameter, 39mm of it is pure dial thanks to a slender polished bezel that makes the watch feel even more like some gauge pulled out of a 1920s machine. It does wear quite large on the wrist, both because of that large cream dial and because of the 50.3mm lug-to-lug length. However, if you’re looking for a watch that you don’t want people to notice, then Meistersinger probably isn’t the brand for you.

There were many choices made to alter the look of the Singularis for this Enamel Limited Edition, and each of them was made perfectly. The colour temperature of the enamel dial is an incredibly pleasing parchment, which forms a wonderfully warm and shining backdrop for the large central hand. The hand is not only heat-blued to look more authentically vintage, but also shaped with thin and elegant values between the counterbalance and arrow tip. The blue is then echoed within the Edition Singularis script below the pinion, and again subtly with some printed extensions of the hour markers. Reading the time on the single hand takes a bit of adjusting, but in essence you can imagine it’s just an hour hand on a regular watch. Each line on the outer track represents 5 minutes, so you can usually round up or down to the nearest 5-minute interval as we often do anyway.

Powering the Meistersinger Singularis Enamel Limited Edition, and visible through the sapphire display caseback, is Meistersinger’s in-house calibre MSH01. In this manual-winding version, there’s no rotor to block your view of the twin mainspring barrels which together provide 120 hours of power reserve across 28,800 vibrations per hour. Of course, there’s no seconds hand on the dial, but you can still bring your ear up to it and hear the pleasingly fast ticks. The decoration is quite generously applied, with spiralled machining across the main plate and blued screws enhancing the luxury aspect.
