Cvstos don’t pop up on the radar of your average watch collector often, but the new collection of Cvstos Metropolitan PS watches is aiming to change that. The idea of a luxury microbrand isn’t all that crazy, and Cvstos aim to hone in on what customers really want from their avant-garde, high-end sports watches. The Cvstos Metropolitan PS is available in five references across two distinct varieties, offering a versatile range of looks that range from rather sophisticated to all-out exhilaration.

The cases

Cvstos Metropolitan PS

Each of the Cvstos Metropolitan PS variants, all use the same overall case design. Utilising the tonneau silhouette that’s a proven success with luxury sports watches, the blending of worlds between boardroom and stadium shows off the personality of the wearer no matter where they are. It has quite an intricate level of detail and finishing, with a brushed surface on the bezel and a polished slope that outlines the edges of the case, leading over to the rather purposeful crown guards on the right-hand side. The crown itself is signed, and the alternating finishing extends even to the display caseback that lists the watch’s edition number.

Measuring 42mm across and 51mm lug-to-lug, the appearance of tonneau cases tends to look a bit larger than circular watches, however it should be a comfortable fit on an average wrist. The design of the bracelet helps, as the integrated look allows the lugs to flow around the curves of a wrist more easily. The bracelet is also a great feat of engineering, with harsh angled chamfers in all the places you like to see light catching, but all of the skin-adjacent edges rounded off nicely for comfort. The H-links are shorter than traditional H-link bracelet designs, with a tiny link between each of them to aid flexibility even more. If you prefer either a more casual or formal look and feel, there are also interchangeable rubber and leather straps available.

The different Cvstos Metropolitan PS versions each come available in various materials too, arguably making an even bigger difference in the watch’s character than the dials. The regular Metropolitan PS is available in either titanium or 18k red gold, while the skeletonised version comes in both of those materials with the addition of a full sapphire case. The existence of a sapphire case outside of the major established brands is an exciting prospect, as the ability to manufacture more watches like this could become more affordable in the future.

The dials

Cvstos Metropolitan PS

The ‘PS’ in the Cvstos Metropolitan PS stands for Petite Seconde, evidently named after the small seconds subdial placed at 6 o’clock. Traditionally, a small seconds complication is used on dress watches and gives them a sense of occasion, however on the Metropolitan it actually adds some edge. The large subdial size ensures its boldness, and Arabic numerals appear in an energetic font to improve legibility. A date window is cut out at the bottom, injecting even more functionality into that area. The dial itself is neatly decorated, with vertical striping on the blue dial of the titanium model or the black dial of the gold watch.

The Cvstos Metropolitan PS Skeleton is where the modernist attitude comes into life, removing the ornate dial of the standard model and giving insight into the mechanical workings within. The titular small seconds subdial still serves its purpose of injecting the watch with its character, now using a sapphire ring for the markers and a unique three-pronged seconds hand that makes the whole watch seem like a motorsport component. Structural elements of the skeletonised movement have been coated in green PVD for the titanium and sapphire models, while the red-gold model has a blue coating for a more regal effect.

The movement

Cvstos use their own in-house Calibre CVS410 that has served them well in the past, with a beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and 50 hours of power reserve keeping it as a solid daily performer. The decoration is well executed as seen from the sapphire caseback, with the Geneva striping matching the dial of the standard Cvstos Metropolitan PS model. The winding rotor is made of gold and skeletonised, but the main standout feature is the inclusion of a QR code. Each watch has a unique online page that can be accessed through this code, providing details, information, and identification for your specific numbered watch.
