Green finally arrives to the Vacheron Constantin Overseas
Buffy AcaciaConsidering that Vacheron Constantin is one of the oldest and most respected watch brands in the world, famously belonging to the Holy Trinity of Swiss watchmaking, it’s clear that it’s not the kind of company to hop on bandwagons. Green dials have already passed from being a trend into the norm, and it seems that Vacheron Constantin have spent that time perfecting this exact release. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection in green is totally captivating, and shows exactly what a high-end luxury sports watch should be.
All of the watches in this collection share most of the same dial attributes, so let’s get into what really makes them special. Dynamics are really what makes this colour stand out from all of the other green dials, and it’s something they’ve achieved with textural contrast. The base colour is a desaturated green, which is given a sunburst finish in the centre, circular brushing on the minute track ring, and matte on the chapter ring. This splits the sections of highlights and lowlights, creating a kind of hourglass-like shape spinning around the dial when the angle changes. In the shadows, the tone is pretty similar to a deep British racing green. In light, the brightest spots have the feel of pastel sage. These colours are supposedly inspired by nature, and invoke a sense of adventure through travelling as the Overseas collection was made to do. The use of 18k pink gold also brings out the best in the green, embracing its warmth.
There are a total of four references in this collection, however more are surely to come as time passes. The first is the most indicative of the Overseas’ ethos, and that’s the Dual Time with a 41mm diameter. If a watch is meant to celebrate travel, then a GMT complication will always be the priority. This extra hand can be moved in one hour increments via the crown, while a pusher just below it can advance the date display. There’s also an AM/PM indicator for the home time, which works with the GMT hand to add a pop of red to the dial. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph is beefier at 42.5mm, aiming for the pinnacle of sportiness with a no-nonsense automatic chronograph movement, unless you count the Hallmark of Geneva level of quality and decoration as nonsense.
The last two references are relatively simple three-handers with a date complication, allowing for much more negative space on the dial. This doesn’t just allow you to appreciate the colour more, but also the various beautiful aspects of the case and integrated bracelet. That said, there is a quick-change system for the extra rubber and leather straps.
The smaller model of the two is 35mm in diameter and sports a diamond-set bezel for extra bling, and a 41mm model which is about as classic as it can get. All of the models are capable of being true sports watches thanks to their 150 metres water resistance, however you’d need to be comfortable with getting the case scratched up to take it to the beach.
