The Junghans Meister S Chronoscope blends dressy sophistication with all-out sports utility

  • The Junghans Meister S Chronoscope is now available with a blue dial.
  • The 45mm watch is fully featured with 200m of water resistance.
  • Its style is a great blend between dressy sophistication and all-out sports utility.

Junghans first released the Meister S Chronoscope in 2020, and in hindsight it’s hard to believe that it’s taken three years for them to release it in a colour so simple and versatile. With a large helping of German character, the new Junghans Meister S Chronoscope in fumé blue brings a surprising amount of sophistication to the jumbo-size sports watch. Whether you’ve got larger wrists or just prefer the heft of something big, this watch offers a unique flavour of luxury that’s both beautiful and capable.

Getting dimensions out of the way, the statuesque 45mm case diameter should thoroughly scare off those who aren’t prepared to strap on a beast, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t wear comfortably. The profile of the case curves generously, and as such the lugs don’t jut out from the confines of your wrist as much as a flieger style watch for instance. The brushing on the lugs and the sweeping crown guards imbues the Junghans Meister S Chronoscope with a sense of utility, while the slender polished bezel backs up the elegance of the dial. Each aspect of its physical form rides the line between dressiness and sportiness, and the strap options confirm that. The steel bracelet is an engineer’s style with alternating links of satin and polish, and fitted end-links that conform nicely to the wrist. If you prefer a more casual style, the blue and black rubber strap with contrast stitching is also fitted for an integrated look.

A blue dial is usually nothing special within a steel sports watch, but Junghans have orchestrated the slick display with finesse. A deep shade of matte “night blue” has been given a lacquer gradient for a dark and moody appearance, but the various details help liven things back up. The partially-skeletonised hands and black chronograph subdials hold the thrill elements, while the applied hour markers and gold-brown subdial hands show off the luxury background. A slim chapter ring with printed minute markers ensures legibility, and the day/date display is available in either English or German. Powering the Junghans Meister S Chronoscope is the calibre J880.1, which is essentially an ETA 7750 base with a customised rotor. The caseback is solid with a Junghans etching, and the movement provides a 48 hour power reserve with a 4Hz beat rate.
