  • The Grand Seiko SBGE295 takes the Mt. Motaka dial in a verdant direction with a silvery-green finish
  • The asymmetrical bi-colour bezel is luminous in its white section, and is covered with a sapphire insert
  • The 44mm case is 200m water resistant, and is powered by the 9R66 Spring Drive movement

The term ‘forest green’ has never been more appropriate than now, with Grand Seiko releasing yet another nature-inspired dial that captivates imaginations better than most brands. The Grand Seiko SBGE295 derives its green dial from the peaks of Mt. Hotaka after its brief summer bloom of vegetation, and although the scratchy texture efficiently evoked rocky cliffs in its black guise, the silvery-green hues are a perfect match for tangles of leafy branches.

Green is no longer the hyped colour it was just a couple of years ago, but if anything, the time since its popularisation has given companies time to perfect their verdant formulas. That said, Seiko have been spearheading fantastic green dials for decades with their older Alpinist and Recraft series of watches, so it makes sense for Grand Seiko to take things up another level. The pairing of this cool-green dial that has a decent amount of blue undertones with a crisp white contrast is gorgeous in both sporty and dressy contexts.

The Grand Seiko SBGE295’s case is definitely one of their bulkier offerings, but it’s an appropriate size for a fully-featured sports watch. The bi-directional bezel with Grand Seiko’s now-signature asymmetrical colour split is entirely luminous in the white portion, and the screw-down crown at 4 o’clock locks in a 200m water resistance. The case is 44mm in diameter, with a 50.8mm lug-to-lug length and a 14.7mm thickness. The movement is the calibre 9R66, which uses Spring Drive technology to deliver a continuous sweep of the seconds hand, +1/-1 second per day accuracy, and a 72-hour power reserve with automatic winding. The power reserve display can be seen on the dial, which also features a date display and the traveller’s GMT functionality.
