Every chance Romaric André gets to add his twist to watches is one of endless creativity. For his latest collab, the man behind seconde/seconde/ teamed up with microbrand Maen to work on their architecturally inspired Manhattan model. This integrated-bracelet sports watch takes after New York’s famously crowded borough, integrating the city’s iconic Art Deco shapes into a geometrical case. Easy pickings, then. Pop an 8-bit image of the Chrysler Building on instead of one of the hands, and job’s a good ‘un. That, however, is not necessarily the seconde/seconde/ way. As Romaric candidly recounted in a T+T interview, his comfort zone lies in doing the unexpected, and his rendition of the Maen Manhattan is certainly that. Let’s get into the details.
As opposed to the relatively subdued regular-production version, this new colour was chosen to represent the colour of the drink as closely as possible. Sporting an impaled maraschino cherry in place of the seconds hand set against a backdrop of diluted red vermouth, the watch is a cutesy take on a classic drink. While the cherry is the most obvious addition, I love the subtle %vol print playing off of the Manhattan 37 name. It’s the kind of clever stuff we’ve come to expect from seconde/seconde/.
It’s not just the vibrant colour, either – vertically adorned with a Côtes de Genève motif, the magenta hues spill over the fan-like streaks and troughs to really make the dial come alive.
Along with an individually numbered caseback engraving, the Manhattan 37% also reminds you not to overwind your Maen, though the Sellita SW200 within shouldn’t trouble you too much. It’s a tried-and-true performer, seen here in its élaboré grade, meaning adjustment in three positions as opposed to two and tighter accuracy standards when compared to the standard grade. The automatic winding and 38-hour power reserve are unchanged.
