Zenith adds a moonphase to the Chronomaster Original and blings out the Sport

  • The Zenith Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar imagines if the A386 from 1969 had included the extra complications.
  • For fans of loud colours, the Chronomaster Sport is now available with a green ceramic dial and bezel.
  • The Chronomaster Sport has also been set with precious gems for the first time, and cased in 18k rose gold.

Zenith have hit 2024 hard and come out swinging, not only with a blue-dialled boutique exclusive version of their overhauled Pilot collection, but now with several new entries to the Chronomaster line. Both the classic ‘60s vibes of the Chronomaster Original and the more contemporary Chronomaster Sport have been expanded, representing both ends of the traditional to gaudy spectrum. It’s safe to say that Zenith have positioned themselves well for 2024, entering the conversation with nearly every kind of watch genre.

Zenith Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar

Zenith Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar 1

Starting off with the new Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar, Zenith have honed in on the 1960s classicism prevalent throughout its range. Of course the atmosphere of a vintage racetrack still runs throughout the case and panda dial combinations, but the simple addition of a weekday and month display brings it into a realm of sophistication we don’t usually associate an El Primero chronograph with. Apparently the intention to integrate a triple calendar complication into the El Primero A386 existed all the way back in 1969, but by the time Zenith produced them, the style had gone the way of 1970s funk. This release is sort of a “what if” scenario, where Zenith could have released this watch as originally intended.

The 38mm size is going to be music to enthusiasts’ ears, not just because modest sizing is popular but because it was based on the same proportions of the original A386. What isn’t from 1969 are the three dial combinations, firstly and secondly in panda and reverse panda configurations with stunning slate grey and white opaline colours. The reverse panda version is actually inspired from a 1970 prototype. The third reference is much more dazzling, with an olive green sunburst finish that really suits the sporty/dressy hybrid feel. Powered by the El Primero 3610 visible from the sapphire caseback, it beats with the quintessential 5Hz sweep and has a power reserve of 60 hours.

Zenith Chronomaster Sport Green and Gem-set

Zenith Chronomaster Sport green 1

On the contemporary side of things, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport has been given an extremely colourful overhaul. With the collection’s focus on precision sidelined for an explosion of colour, this Chronomaster Sport has now been given a bright green dial and bezel in ceramic – similar to the recent Aaron Rodgers special edition. The glossy green is offset by the silver, grey, and blue subdials which are easily distinguishable, and it’s also available for the first time with a green integrated rubber strap. The Chronomaster Sport model has usually been visually accessible as a blend of vintage and modern elements, but this particular version is certainly going to have a personality of its own.

If personality is what you’re after, then you’ll also want to hear about the Chronomaster Sport reference which is redefining Zenith’s approach to luxury. They’re definitely not a stoic brand, having released plenty of fun special editions before, but this Chronomaster Sport with its 18k rose gold case set with diamonds, sapphires and spinels is ostentatious in all the best ways. The gold-plated meteorite dial is stunning with its linen-like texture, providing a perfect backdrop for the iconic tri-colour chronograph registers. Both of the new Chronomaster Sport models measure in at 41mm in diameter, and are powered by the El Primero 3600 movement.
