What’s the connection between The Matrix and the Hamilton PSR MTX Limited Edition? We have the exclusive…

Hamilton loves to tell a great story with each of their new releases. This facet of the brand is recognised by many of their partners. Typically speaking, when their products appear in films or video games, the entities behind them approach Hamilton for a collaboration. But in the instance of the new Hamilton PSR MTX Limited Edition the script was flipped. As the Hamilton team explored the next stages of ideas for the collection, it became abundantly clear there was a greater story to tell.

Hamilton PSR MTX

When I met with Hamilton CEO Vivian Stauffer in California a few weeks back, he explained: “The launch of the PSR in 2020 was such a success and we knew its story of innovation would continue to connect with current narratives. As we explored next iterations of the watch, the link between the first digital watch and the digital universe of The Matrix immediately seemed like the perfect fit and here we are with the PSR MTX.”

In my opinion, I totally understand why the introduction of the watch to market was held to coincide with the release of The Matrix Resurrections. The PVD black case and bracelet and green L.E.D. dial was a natural modern evolution of the PSR, but the aesthetic really does evoke a clear Matrix vibe. It is quite a testament to its revolutionary design that a watch, originally introduced in 1970, maintains its futuristic and forward-thinking appeal by even today’s standards. Let’s not forget that the PSR was featured in the Roger Moore-led Bond film Live and Let Die in 1973 to heighten the technical gadgetry  of the movie. Decades later, it remains a natural pairing for this new Matrix film.

Digging into the specs, the Hamilton PSR MTX Limited Edition is every bit the same watch technically as the PSR revivals of 2020. The entirely brushed PVD stainless-steel watch is 30.4mm in diameter, 13.3mm thick, and 40.8mm lug-to-lug. It is incredibly wearable, something I appreciate with a smaller wrist, while also having enough of a stance for larger wrists as well. Its dimensions keep the modern design faithful to its muse, but being a modern watch there is one crucial modern advantage: 100 metres of water-resistance. From experience, the previous PSR watches succeed in appealing to modern standards while transporting you back to the past. The Hamilton PSR MTX, however, represents the future of the line – an entirely new colour scheme previously unexplored.

The pin and collar sized bracelet has compact links, so while there is no micro-adjustment in the clasp you will likely have no issue sizing it and finding the perfect fit. Its most overt tie-in to the film is its engraved caseback which displays the famous cascading rainfall Matrix code, the number out of 1,999 pieces and words “limited edition”, “Hamilton”, “water-resistant”, “10 bar/145 psi”, and “H524340” SKU code subtly incorporated into its aesthetic.

Setting the time is an absolute breeze. Simply hold the crown down for three seconds to enter the time-setting mode, and then press the crown to advance the numerals, holding the crown for two seconds to proceed to the next digit you want to adjust. This is the same crown, that when pressed outside of the time setting mode, illuminates the dial, and when depressed again reveals a running seconds count. I know that reading this it may sound intimidating, but without a manual, or asking the Hamilton team any questions, I was able to intuitively set the time in less than a minute.

So the million dollar question here is whether or not the watch is actually worn in the film? The answer: no. Vivian Stauffer explained: “It’s important for us to work hand-in-hand with the studios and to respect their creative vision, which this time didn’t include a timepiece. But even though the PSR MTX doesn’t appear in the film, it still celebrates the saga’s story of revolution both with its origin story and with the subtle Matrix details we’ve incorporated into the design.” Hamilton’s true appreciation for storytelling will always outweigh commercial self-interest, which, in my opinion, adds a further layer of authenticity to their creations and partnerships.

The exclusive…

While the PSR MTX is not worn in the film, we did receive this piece of intel from Hamilton. Keep your eyes peeled when the film arrives, the Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono will in fact be seen on the wrist of a key character in the movie. You’ll have to watch to find out who!
