INTRODUCING: Tudor gives the people what they want with new 39mm Pelagos

Zach Blass

Finally! Look, I have always felt the Pelagos is one of the strongest dive watches on the market. But, afflicted with slender wrist syndrome, the size, while it could work for my wrist, was not optimal. While many enjoy the original 42mm Pelagos, and for good reason, others have shared my sentiment – the people begging for a more compact take to explore as well. Well, that day has just come thanks to the new Tudor Pelagos 39mm.

We will need to circle back for the full dimensions, but the listed diameter, as its name suggests, is 39mm.

The case is fabricated in grade 2 titanium, light and highly scratch-resistant, and is entirely satin finished to maintain a full-on tool watch vibe.

Some of the most coveted vintage Rolex Submariners and Sea-Dwellers carry premiums due to their red text on the dial, so many watch afficianados will love the fact the watch has a black satin sunray dial with red text (akin to the Pelagos LHD as well) that is a visual nod to this vintage style. Speaking of vintage style, the dial has no date complication – keeping the dial clean in a manner purists love. In a way this is the “no-date” Submariner of the Tudor catalogue, offering the crown guards the Black Bay does not have.

Like previous Pelagos pieces, there is plenty of lume to up the legibility factor – the black ceramic timing bezel, applied ceramic composite monobloc hour markers, and central Snowflake handset all coated with Super-Luminova®. Of course there are some very digestible compromises due to the smaller size. The case, with a screw-down crown, is water-resistant to 200m, versus the 500m depth rating of the original Pelagos 42mm.

The bracelet of the Tudor Pelagos 39mm is also a touch different, making use of the recently introduced T-fit rapid adjustment clasp instead of the patented spring-loaded extension system found on the original 42mm. While many will enjoy the grade 2 titanium bracelet, you are not limited to it. The Tudor Pelagos 39mm comes with a link-integrated complimentary black rubber strap that utilizes a grade 2 titanium buckle to secure it to the wrist.

Inside is the Tudor manufacture calibre MT5400, the very same calibre used in the Black Bay Fifty-Eight line. Therefore I would infer the thickness of the watch will be not far beyond 12mm or so. The COSC certified calibre offers a near weekend-proof 70 hours of power reserve, and heightened resistance against magnetism thanks to its silicon hairspring.
