Zach BlassOk, look, this is a safe space. I hate that I even have to say that as a prelude to a sentence that includes Coldplay. Unashamedly, I love Coldplay’s music. I have even been to three Coldplay concerts, although this revelation leads to haters – looking at you Rikki of Scottish Watches notoriety – ribbing me. Like any other mega sensation, there are plenty of people who are huge fans and holdouts who refuse to join in on the fun. But that is neither here nor there, cause the real focus for now is love. Anyone like myself who has had the pleasure of attending a Coldplay concert is probably familiar with the Love Button Global Movement, as these buttons, which you will always see lead singer Chris Martin wearing, are also handed out to concertgoers as well. Now, however, there is also a set of limited edition ‘Time For Love’ collaborative watches: the Skywatch x Love Button ‘Time For Love’ co-designed with Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
What is the mission of the Love Button Global Movement? Love Button explains: “The Love Button Global Movement (Love Button) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization created to get people excited about transforming the world with their love and inspire them to do so through community-based philanthropy, volunteerism, and individual acts of kindness toward family, friends, and especially perfect strangers.” To learn more about their activations and programs, you can find all the information on their website here. There are two Swiss Made configurations to explore, each a limited edition of 1,000 pieces and each benefitting the Love Button organisation. Both watches, thanks to their timing bezels, appear to heavily homage the iconic Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. The 38mm option, 11.5mm thick, is a three-hander with a date window placed at the enthusiast-controversial 4′ position. In this case, however, it makes complete sense to not obscure the Love branding – which is identical to the logo seen on the buttons. The 44mm configuration, 12.5mm thick, builds upon the layout of the 38mm model with a chronograph complication. Both models, Swiss quartz-driven, executed in stainless steel, and 200 metres water-resistant, feature a trendy turquoise colour scheme, silicone rubber straps, a solid screwed-down caseback engraved with an inscription from Chris Martin, and dial that has not only lume-filled hands and indices but also lume within the timing scale of the bezel and the Love branding on the dial – all of which glows in blue.
With the pricing set at US$395 for the 38mm model and US$495 for the 44mm model, it may be a hard sell for watch enthusiasts – especially watch or Coldplay snobs. But, if you are a fan of the band, Chris Martin, and/or the Love Button Global Movement and their cause, then this may be a fun and cause-benefitting addition to your collection. In the same vein as a MoonSwatch or Blancpain x Swatch BioCeramic Scuba, and relatively within the same price tier, this is a playful watch you will either love or hate with no in-between.
