Bausele & seconde/seconde/ team up on a perspective-shifting dive watch that’ll scare (or delight) surfers

Jamie Weiss
  • seconde/seconde/ teams up with Australia’s very own Bausele on a “bipolar” dive watch.
  • Based on the Bausele Sydney Diver, it features an oversized seconds hand with a shark/surfboard fin graphic, depending on your perspective.
  • Two variants are available – a black dial and a white dial – and it comes with either a Velcro or rubber strap.

Over the last few days, Romaric André (a.k.a. seconde/seconde/) and Christophe Hoppé (the founder of Bausele) have got a bit philosophical as they’ve teased their first-ever collaboration, trading aphorisms across social media. “Your point of view depends on your viewpoint.” “Every fin is not every fin.” “With time, your point of view changes.” All the while, they’ve been sharing imagery of sharks and surfboards. What’s this all about?

Guess no more. In typical seconde/seconde/ style, Romaric has transmogrified Bausele’s Sydney Diver with a tongue-in-cheek and extremely Australian motif, highly appropriate for his first collaboration with an Australian watch brand: a pixelated fin graphic that, every 30 seconds, evokes either an imminent shark attack or a bobbing surfboard – depending on your perspective, of course.

Bausele Seconde Seconde perspective

The Bausele x seconde/seconde/ Perspective, as the name implies, features an oversized, double-sided seconds hand with this aforementioned fin graphic at its centre. Every 30 seconds, the fin is inverted, with the long hand serving as a sort of waterline or horizon. It’s a simple yet clever way of transforming the Sydney Diver’s aesthetic, turning it from a function-forward dive watch into a playful art piece.

Bausele Seconde Seconde caseback

Bausele and seconde/seconde/ are in on the joke, of course. At 6 o’clock on the dial, they’ve written “deep!” – an offhanded reference to the watch’s 200m of water resistance, sure, but also an acknowledgement that the Perspective’s mischievous design has no pretensions of being a serious philosophical exercise. Hell, the caseback features an engraving that spells out the joke for you.

Bausele Seconde Seconde deep

Like standard Sydney Diver models, the Bausele x seconde/seconde/ Perspective features a black IP stainless steel case, a unidirectional diving bezel with colour-matched blue Super-LumiNova markings, and one of Bausele’s trademark hollow crowns, which is filled with red sand from the Kimberley, the rugged northern region of Western Australia.

Two dial variants are available: black or white. The white model is equally as Gallic as it is Aussie – with that pop of red sand in the crown forming a French Tricolore – while the black dial variant exudes a tough aesthetic that’s completely at odds with the un-serious nature of the watch. Both are available on either a black Tropic-style rubber strap or a blue Velcro strap, a first for the Bausele Sydney Diver.
