The top 3 Alpina releases of 2022
Ricardo SimeThis has been a long year for those of us who write about watches. More than any year I can think of, it has provided what felt like an endless parade of new watch releases. So much so, that it’s easy for a brand or watch to get lost in the shuffle. Before you start digging through the archives to see what slipped through the cracks, take a deep breath. We’ve decided to highlight some brands and releases you may have missed, but that are definitely worth your time. And one of those brands is Alpina. They had a very strong showing this year and, I believe, are poised to redefine the public’s opinion of their work.
Here are three of Alpina’s 2022 releases that are at the forefront of this movement.
Startimer Pilot Heritage Chrono Blackout
The Startimer Pilot Heritage Chrono isn’t a new watch for Alpina. First introduced in 2019, the 42mm monopusher chronograph became the new, go-to mechanical chronograph in the Startimer family. It came in multiple colourways and had a distinct cushion case which meant the lug-to-lug was a very reasonable 45mm.
For 2022, Alpina decided to release two new versions. Both come in a stealthy black PVD case with either a panda or reverse-panda dial. The overall look created makes what was already a reasonably sized chronograph seem even smaller on the wrist, though the dimensions haven’t changed.
My reason for putting these new Startimer Pilot Heritage Chrono Blackouts on the list, even though limited to only 50 pieces per reference, is Alpina’s decision to continue adding new pieces to the collection. Too often brands give references no time to marinate in the minds of collectors. It’s refreshing to see the brand returning to the collection three years later, and I hope they continue to grow it.

Seastrong Diver 300 Automatic Calanda
In the last few years, there has been a huge push from watch brands to be mindful of the environmental impact of their creations. Some have focused on using recycled materials for straps. Others are focusing on their packaging. Alpina this year decided to dive into this head-first with the Seastrong Diver 300 Automatic Calanda.
The watch comes in a 100% recycled 42mm steel case that has a beautiful relief bezel. It’s coupled with a black and grey strap strap that is made from recycled plastic. But it doesn’t stop there with the watch packaging being made from recycled plastic. The certificate and warranty printed on recycled paper. And a completely digital user guide.
Seeing how far Alpina is willing to go to be eco-friendly is quite commendable. And selfishly, it’s nice to see a collection in the Seastrong Diver 300 lose 2mm from it’s traditionally 44mm case. Here’s to seeing Alpina continue on both fronts.

Alpiner Extreme Automatic
Every brand needs that one collection that is the cornerstone of their offering. For years, you’d wonder what that collection was for Alpina. And this year, it seems, they’ve found it with the Alpiner Extreme Automatic.
As stated in my hands-on review, the Alpiner Extreme Automatic collection is a perfect response for today’s watch market. The integrated design, well-finished and angular case, and reasonable 41mm size are all things that appeal to the average buyer. Add to that the patterned dial and Alpina seems to be firing on all cylinders here.
In the future, I hope to see them double down on the collection, introducing more complications and hopefully adding a bracelet.
