Ever since I saw a 30-minute teaser for this film during Dubai Watch Week last year, I have been itching for the premiere of the full feature. Making Time, executive produced by Ian Skelleren (co-founder of Quill & Pad) and Hind Abdul Hamied Seddiqi (Director General of Dubai Watch Week), not only delivers a documentary that die-hard horology lovers will find thrilling, but also makes it accessible for those totally foreign to the watch world. Rather than simply delve into the horology, Making Time digs into the humans behind the art form – peering behind the curtain of their work and into their life stories as well.

The synopsis of the film reads: “Making Time is a documentary about five extraordinary horologists. Its breathtaking imagery frames emotive and exquisite portraits of human life that are universal in scope. We delve into each subject’s life story, delivered authentically, intimately. We explore their childhoods, their mistakes and their joys, their momentous decisions, their regrets and loves, their losses. All the raw and honest moments in their lives that add up to create their identities and to inform their work. For the work of independent watchmakers is always profoundly connected to their life experiences. Raw, unscripted, intimate.”

The creators of the film have assigned monikers of sorts to each of the five subjects: actor and horologist Aldis Hodge (dubbed ‘The Outsider’), independent watchmaker Ludovic Ballouard (‘The Dreamer’), antiquarian horologist Brittany Nicole “Nico” Cox (‘The Philosopher’), MB&F founder Max Büsser (‘The Alchemist’), and living-legend watchmaker Philippe Dufour (‘The Master’). Each, in a way, foreshadows the distinct narrative each individual has to tell.

Unfortunately for watch geeks like ourselves, it is not often we get films dedicated to our passion. Making Time joins a short-list of such features, including Keeper of Time and The Watchmaker’s Apprentice. Considering the holidays and new year are upon us, you hopefully will have a moment to pause, kick back, relax, and enjoy the end of 2022 before it’s back off to the races in 2023. And in this egg-nog soaked, latke-filled, time of year, this is the perfect time, and the perfect film, to try and bring your friends and family into the horological world you hold so dear.
