The Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition in Canopus gold is for the Bond villains

Zach Blass

While the Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition in stainless steel was a visual tribute to various Omega watches worn by James Bond, particularly the first wave-dial Seamaster worn by Pierce Brosnan and the tenure-ending No Time To Die Edition Seamaster worn by Daniel Craig, this Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition in Canopus gold is perhaps less about aesthetic tribute and more about grand celebration.

The case

Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition

It is certainly has more bling and deviates from steel with a Canopus (white) gold case. But the foundation is effectively the same as the steel model: 42mm case, 49.9mm lug-to-lug, with a tad more thickness likely due to the diamond-set bezel at 15.3mm thick. It retains the expected 300-metre depth rating, and has the contentious Reese’s cup-shaped helium escape valve at the 10′ position.

The most striking visual point of difference from the steel model is the deviation from an aluminium bezel to diamond-set bezel. Treated in various green and yellow hues, the bezel is set with a gradient of diamonds – with the triangular pip of the timing bezel formed by two untreated cut diamonds.

The dial

The second largest visual deviation is the Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition Canopus gold’s natural grey silicon dial. The natural texture of the silicon offers a look and vibe akin to meteorite, but its usage does have a subtle tie in to James Bond as Omega believe it is evocative of the sands of 007’s Caribbean hideaway. Its layout is otherwise familiar, with raised rectangular and circular hour indices, skeletonised hours and minutes hands, and a lollipop central seconds hand – all of which are filled with SuperLuminova®.

The bracelet

As was the case with the steel 60 Years of James Bond Edition, the Canopus gold model we have here also debuts the mesh bracelet in a new material. The No Time To Die 007 Edition was the first to use this mesh-style bracelet with a folding clasp – executed in case-matching titanium. The steel 60 Years of James Bond Edition was outfitted with the first-ever, stainless-steel take on the bracelet, and this Canopus gold model marks the first-ever mesh-style bracelet in their proprietary white gold alloy. Some mesh bracelets are infinitely sizable, but this Omega bracelet has holes in which the folding clasp can be set. I would be curious to know if both the new steel and Canopus gold mesh bracelet, like the titanium, are available in a regular and short size. It is a supple yet robust bracelet, very comfortable on the wrist. But, I do find the bulk of the folding clasp, and the thickness it adds, a bit too imposing for my own personal liking.

The movement

Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition

The Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition in Canopus gold usage of the calibre 8807 versus the 8806 does not denote that it uses a different movement. The designation is strictly due to its elevated finish, or rather elevated use of materials. Contrasting the rhodium-plated tones of the movement is a Sedna (rose) gold full balance bridge and a Sedna gold winding rotor. The calibre is otherwise the same, with 55 hours of power reserve, arabesque wave decoration, METAS certification, and, like the steel 60 Years of James Bond Edition model, a moiré animation caseback that shows the iconic down-the-barrel Bond opening sequence. It is linked to the central seconds hand, so as long as the watch is ticking the animation is ongoing. There is no sacrifice in power reserve as Omega has decreased the weight of the seconds hand to compensate for the extra power needed.

The verdict

Omega Seamaster 300M Diver 60 Years of James Bond Edition

Ultimately, this offering is less about Bond cosplay or tribute, at least on the surface, than other recent Bond editions. The vibe I get is that this is the glamorous James Bond Edition that, ironically, could be the Seamaster the Bond villain wears in a movie – sitting in their castle petting their cat. It’s surely not within everyone’s budget or taste, but it is a special and handsome creation that is there for those that want a Seamaster that takes things to a whole other level.
