Hear that sound in the distance – coming ever closer? Is it the future, or is it a bandwagon? It’s too early to tell, but either way IWC are the latest large watch group to jump on board.

Late last night Australian time IWC announced IWC Connect – their foray into the world of connected devices. Details are scarce, but what we do know is that this ‘intelligent tool’ will be integrated into the watch strap – starting with the Big Pilot and soon followed by the rest of the IWC sports range. According to IWC the tool will be able to track the wearers activities and allow them to interact with their connected devices.

This announcement follows only months after the Montblanc e-Strap, which makes us wonder if we’ll be seeing more strap based connected devices from Richemont brands in the future. We’ll have to wait for more information, but from the early teaser images the IWC Connect may well be the most attractive, well designed offering thus far. Though we can’t help but be reminded of those compasses you’d put on your watch strap when you wanted to look outdoorsy and tough. In fact, that sort of cool functionality would fit pretty well with the IWC brand image.
