WHO TO FOLLOW: The horologically centered art of @dianaevansillustration

Imagine flipping a switch and entering a cartoon world where you were the main character. Any limitations that you would normally place on yourself would disappear. One day you’d go skydiving while the next, you’d kayak the Nile. However, even in this fantasy world, your passions would still shine through (I would make sure my cartoon self was wearing a Vacheron Constantine Overseas Perpetual Calendar). This is exactly the case for our Who To Follow for this week. She’s an artist who has taken her love for watches to a whole other artform. Say hello to @dianaevansillustration.

Diana Evans is an artist from Toronto, Canada, who first caught my attention when I saw one of her painted mugs on a friend’s page. The way she depicted an Omega Speedmaster brought a bit of playfulness and colour to a very classic and no nonsense design. As a watch lover, I also appreciate any horological-related merch I can get my hands on (already dreaming of a Grand Seiko mug). The deeper I dug into Diana’s work, the more I wanted to know about the artist behind it all. To which Diana was gracious enough to answer my questions.

How did your love for watches start?

“At age four, I started ballet lessons.” Diana explains. “My parents worked very hard to make our schedules work and I learned the importance of time and “being on time” at a very young age.
It was due to ballet and my determination to always be on time, that my parents gave me a manual wind timepiece and it felt like I gained superpowers! To still have it in my collection and to still witness it keep perfect time makes me so happy!”

How did that intersect with art?

“I accidentally started working on fine-art paintings of my favourite timepieces and magically people started to follow my work.” she says. “I really had no idea there were so many horology addicts out in the world.”

“Then one night I started what I call bedtime sketches and this created a nightly ritual that has grown into over 500 sketches… I also feel very blessed for the commissions that I get to work on. Working to design some artwork for Swatch was definitely a highlight for me in the last few years. Now I get to work with some incredible people and my heart is so full. Sharing TIME is the greatest. I also developed a whole line of incredible horology-inspired products and knowing my art brings some joy to people all over the world, inspires me to be a better version of myself daily.”

@dianaevansillustration work really does bring joy to the hearts of many collectors. Through her caricatures, she lives out a fantasy that displays the passion we all have for this hobby of ours as well as others that tend to circle horology. From aviation to cars, all get explored in her drawings. And all it takes is a follow to open the doors to her fantastical world.
