The checklist of things you’d ideally have can be pretty long sometimes, whether it’s water resistance, functionality, size, material or the type of strap that it arrives on. But when you do find a watch that ticks most, if not all, of the boxes that are important to you, the chemistry in your brain changes as you begin to focus all of your attention on the watch. On paper, both the Grand Seiko SBGN019 and SBGN021 could be the watch. There’s certainly a lot to like in what they offer.
From a birds-eye view, both of these references offer a 40mm stainless steel watch on a matching bracelet, 200m of water resistance, a GMT function and accuracy to within 10 seconds per year. As a bonus, you’re also looking at an instant change date complication, fixed ceramic bezel with 24 hour scale and a rather attractive dial texture.
If that wasn’t all enough, you’re also getting a case shape that is not only quintessential Grand Seiko, from the razor-sharp angles to the mirror polishing of the flat surfaces, but also wears fairly compact on the wrist thanks to the short lugs and swiftly tapering bracelet. It’s a compelling package, both on the spec sheet and wrist, so long as you can see the beauty in a quartz-powered wristwatch.
