The Beaucroft Seeker 37mm is a great example of why microbrands exist
Time+TideYou may have heard of the following saying: “it’s a good time to be a watch enthusiast”. Though it’ll perhaps take time for that one to reach the annals of history, it doesn’t make it any less true. Today, we turn the spotlight on a little gem of independent British watchmaking called the Seeker 37mm Teal made by Beaucroft out of Cambridge. This model is the epitome of what microbrands do best – bespoke design, excellent quality, and a fair price.
The case
We begin with the star of the show, the Beaucroft Seeker’s case. Its dimensions and design are the reason for it standing out, both because of mid-range sizing and the flowing shape of the lugs. As you may have guessed, the Seeker comes in with a diameter of 37mm, with a lug-to-lug of 42.5mm, thickness of 10mm, and 18mm lug width. As presented here on my 16.5cm wrist, the Seeker wears very well. But do not be fooled by its modest appearance, the case of the Seeker comes with a few tricks up its lugs.
I thoroughly enjoy its side profile. The flanks are made of two sections, one fully polished which arches around the push-pull signed crown, and the other hides beneath it and showcases a fine sandblasted finish. The mirror-like polishing work on the case is superb and the sandblasted texture is soft to the touch and easy on the eyes.
The central sections of the lugs come with the same matte finish, while the fixed bezel is fully polished. Beaucroft further opted to fully polish the two-part case-back which comes with a see-through sapphire crystal. Sapphire is also found on the top, a double-domed crystal to be exact. The Seeker is what I would best describe as being an everyday elegant watch and as such, it comes with a reasonable 50 metres of water resistance.
The dial
This Seeker 37’s teal dial stands out with a symmetrical and legible dial layout. Notice the polished applied hour markers and how they are recessed within the slightly raised minute track. This design choice endows the Seeker with a gentle dimension which is welcome here. Furthermore, the hour markers at the cardinal points are more visible than the others as they are equipped with circular lumed elements. The hands are also easy to read and elegant, in what seems to be modernised leaf hands which are also lumed and fully polished. I love how the tips of the hands perfectly match the shape of the applied hour markers.
What is perhaps even more interesting is the dial color: teal with a fumé treatment which gives the Seeker great visual depth and aids in making reading the time an easy task. Indeed, the fumé treatment is the darkest where the applied hour markers are. In other words, the dial of the Seeker is both dynamic and easy to read, a combo that is not often easy to achieve.
The strap
You can choose from four strap and bracelet options when purchasing the Beaucroft Seeker – three Horween leather colours (brown, natural, and black), and a mesh bracelet. The one I had in for review came on the brown leather strap. It is beautifully made, supple, comes with a solid buckle and quick-release spring bars for easy strap change.
The movement
As to what beats inside, Beaucroft opted for a no-date Miyota 9039 that ticks at 28,800vph (4Hz) and comes with 42 hours of power reserve. The brand went a step further by regulating the movements in-house to run within 10 seconds per day, though decoration is minimal, reserved for the engraved rotor. The Miyota 9000 series of movements are known for being reliable and accurate, therefore a great choice here.
