Borna said it perfectly in his August 1 article: “another month, another MoonSwatch”. Or near-perfectly, because today it is ‘same month, another MoonSwatch’. With hands produced strictly under the full moon on August 1, Omega x Swatch have just unveiled a sixth entry into the Moonshine Gold series that is the first not to use the Mission to the Moon gray case: the Omega x Swatch Mission to Moonshine Gold Blue Moon in a Neptune case in honour of the upcoming August 30 blue moon.

Enticingly, this edition is cased in the rather rare Neptune blue variant. Why is it rather rarer? Well, for a period of time the standard Mission to Neptune was pulled from stores due to a defect in which the blue of the BioCeramic case would bleed onto the wrist of the wearer. Harmless, but not ideal, production stopped on the Neptune models until Omega x Swatch were able to solve the caseback bleeding issue. With this production pause of what was already quite hard to purchase at Swatch stores, it is fair to assume there are less Mission to Neptune watches in the wild than the other models.

While appreciative of how cool this collaboration was, at least initially, I have never really had the impulse to purchase one for myself. And, with each new subtly different entry into the Moonshine Gold series that succeeded the original 11, I felt Omega x Swatch were creating more and more MoonSwatch fatigue. With accessibility issues still prevalent with the original 11, and new watches that were not really very new with subtle seconds hand switch-ups, this once groundbreaking novelty seemed to be retreading ground. This Mission to Moonshine Gold Blue Moon, however, I would argue, is the most exciting MoonSwatch debut since the originals. Yes, it is just another standard model with a Moonshine Gold hand. But, this may be the best chance people have had in a long time to get a Neptune – no less a special edition to be sold strictly on August 30 (during the blue moon).
