Game time: Fly your team’s colours with these Super Bowl MVPs

D.C. Hannay

Here in the United States, the National Football League’s championship game, the Super Bowl, kicks off this Sunday between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. We thought it’d be fun to showcase some team-adjacent watches to match your game-day gear, for both the casual fan, and those that bleed their team’s colours. Let’s go to the highlight reel of these Super Bowl MVPs.

Philadelphia Eagles

As much as it pains me to say, the Eagles had a blockbuster year, finishing with a 16-3 record, and dominating their division. As a longtime New York Giants fan, despite our best season in several years, the Eagles utterly dissected us in the divisional playoffs, 38-7. It was tough to watch, but I have to give props to quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Eagles roster for their absolute masterclass on both sides of the ball that day, and pretty much all season long. You deserve your place in the championship, and in honour of a stellar year, here are my green-dialled picks for Eagles devotees, from the casual spectator to rabid superfans.

The bandwagon fan – Seiko 5 Sports SKX Sports Style SRPD61

Just because you’re only here for the Buffalo wings and beer, doesn’t mean you can’t support the party host’s favourite team. And Seiko’s SKX Sports Style SRPD61, with its cool green dial and bezel is an entry-level champ at US$295. The 42.5mm diameter case and 46mm lug-to-lug offers similar fit to its spiritual predecessor, the sadly discontinued SKX diver, but with an updated 4R36 movement. It features 100 metres of water resistance, day/date window, and comes on a stainless-steel bracelet, but would look totally game-ready on a green, black, or grey aftermarket strap.

The diehard – Tissot PRX Powermatic 80/Green Dial

You’re a serious fan, and the much-lauded Tissot PRX is a serious contender among entry-level Swiss watches, feeling much more luxurious than it has any right to be at the US$675 price. You get the celebrated Powermatic 80 movement that offers a long weekend’s 80-hour power reserve, the ultra-hot integrated look, and a bracelet that feels way more luxe in terms of finish than anything in its segment. Best of all, it comes in an Eagles-green dial that apes the tapisserie look of much more expensive pieces.

The season ticket holder – Omega Seamaster Diver 300M/Green Dial

To call you a superfan would be an understatement. So deep is your Philly love, you grew up wearing Eagles pyjamas every night (and probably still do), so you deserve a timepiece worthy of your undying devotion. Omega’s green-dialled Seamaster 300M is that watch. Getting doused by a beerslinger’s tray of Yuengling drafts at The Linc is no match for the 300 metres of water resistance, and the Seamaster’s timeless style has been a classic since the days when Pierce Brosnan was James Bond. The modern version features Omega’s superb Co-axial Master Chronometer movement, and of course, the green wave dial and matching ceramic bezel insert are perfect for showing your true colours.

The superstar – Richard Mille RM 029 LMC

Now here’s one for the game MVP. If you win this Sunday, you deserve to treat yourself to a little something special. And there’s probably no higher-profile flex than a Richard Mille. And while this limited edition celebrates the Le Mans Classic vintage auto race, could the colour scheme be any more Eagles? Constructed of green and white Quartz TPT, the case sports dual white stripes that recall both Philly’s uniforms and the gridiron itself, with pops of first-down orange for good measure. The skeletonised dial is pure RM Baller Mode, showcasing the high-tech auto movement that features a crazy variable-geometry rotor that adapts to activity level. The price? Let’s just say you’d need an NFL-level salary to snag this party piece.

Kansas City Chiefs

Unless you’re a Philly Phanatic, you can’t help but root for Kansas City. In spite of some pretty daunting injuries throughout the roster this year, they eked out the very same 16-3 record as the Eagles to punch their ticket to the finals, including a 23-20 nailbiter over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game. And if you didn’t know, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is a big watch guy, with an all-star lineup of Rolexes in the box, including a GMT-Master II “Batgirl”, a Yacht-Master II, and even a rainbow Daytona. I’m a fan, simply because he’s the most entertaining quarterback in the league, and I’ll be wearing my first KC pick below, crossing my fingers that his ankle injury doesn’t flare up again.

The bandwagon fan – Casio G-Shock “Casioak” GA2100-4A

My wallet-friendly personal choice is the OG red G-Shock GA2100-4A, in all its scarlet, monochromatic glory. The internet-busting analogue/digital Casioak is a modern-day design classic, featuring the profile that recalls the iconic AP Royal Oak, and this one’s perfect for Kansas City boosters on a budget. The thinner dimensions and super-tough Carbon Core build are perfect for that pickup game before kickoff, and it’s impervious to both White Claw and wing sauce. At just US$99, it’s also the bargain MVP.

The diehard – TAG Heuer Formula 1/Red Dial

Super Bowl MVPsA step up in fandom deserves a step-up timepiece, and TAG Heuer’s modern-day Formula 1 comes in the perfect shade of red to show your allegiance to Chiefs Nation. The quartz chrono movement is ideal for keeping track of those precious game clock seconds, and remember, two minutes is plenty of time for Mahomes to lead his troops down the field for a game-winning drive. The water-resistant stainless case is good for 200 metres, and the matching red rubber strap can easily withstand celebratory Gatorade showers.

The season ticket holder – Zenith Defy Revival A3691

Super Bowl MVPsIf you’ve got season tickets to Arrowhead Stadium, your pockets are surely deep enough to swing this retro-tastic Zenith Defy Revival, replete with its gorgeous fume red dial. A note-perfect tribute to the 1969 original, this one features a sharp octagonal case in a faithful 37mm diameter. Movement innards are upgraded to the contemporary Elite 670, however, and Zenith’s mastery is on full display through the sapphire caseback. The ladder bracelet is the consummate throwback touch, but water resistance is anything but vintage, at a surprising 300 metres. It’ll shrug off a little victory spray of Cristal without a second thought.

The superstar – Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Ruby

 Super Bowl MVPs

Should KC bring home the Lombardi, I think I’ve found the perfect wrist trophy for the game MVP. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Ruby brings eye-watering levels of bling to the table, not to mention exclusivity. Available in 37 or 41mm sizes, the gem-paved model features in the neighborhood of 800 invisibly set baguette rubies (depending on case size), so keeping a low profile might be a bit of a problem. About that exclusivity? The ruby model is part of a bigger 10-piece collection that covers all the colours of the gemological rainbow, so whatever your watch flex budget was, multiply that by 10, because you’re buying ’em all.
