TAG Heuer adds jet-set functionality to the Aquaracer GMT
Borna BošnjakThe Aquaracer collection has long been among TAG Heuer’s most popular. Whether by virtue of the affordable, entry-level models, the robust look or the myriad of colour and finish options, it’s been a staple since its 2004 introduction. The brand new TAG Heuer Aquaracer GMT expands the utility of the well-known formula by an addition of a GMT hand and 24-hour ceramic bezel.
The garage door-style dial is rendered in a sunburst royal blue, with the stark white markers and electric yellow GMT hand acting as highlights. If the existing Aquaracers are anything to go by, the large indices and broad sword handset will provide plentiful luminescence.
TAG Heuer measures the Aquaracer GMT at 43mm in diameter, which will measure closer to 43.7mm, if the brand is continuing to use the same case as the Aquaracer Professional 300. With a polished chamfer expanding as it approaches the tips of the lugs, the Aquaracer GMT adopts an otherwise vertically brushed finish, in line with its tool-tastic aesthetic. I’m interested to see whether the addition of a GMT movement will result in additional thickness when compared to the 12.5mm height of the three-handed diver.
The new Aquaracer GMT will be available on either a three-link, brushed, stainless-steel bracelet or a fitted, blue, rubber strap. Both will feature TAG’s adjustment system cleverly hidden into the side of the clasp, yet there seem to be no quick-release spring bars for the steel bracelet.
Movement-wise, TAG Heuer will continue using its Calibre 7 GMT movement, which features an independently adjustable GMT hand. The brand previously used it in the Aquaracer GMT line-up, and more recently the new Autavia COSC GMT. Based on an ETA 2893/Sellita SW330, it provides up to 50 hours of power reserve, though TAG Heuer does not mention any COSC certification like it does with the Autavia.
