Meet the team! The live video from a watch fair that YouTube has been waiting for…
Andrew McUtchenIt’s fair to say we don’t get everything right, all the time. One video I properly botched was in February last year. It was billed as a “meet the team” video. But in reality, it was me talking about the team, on their behalf. Most commenters were positive enough about the broad message: that you could start to expect more accents other than Australian going forward. But some pointed out that it might have been nicer to actually have footage of the team in action, speaking for themselves. The truth is, I agreed. I would have loved to deliver this at the time.
However, in February 2021, it was a different, frankly draconian reality for Aussies. Firstly, I had a man bun, which I hope we can all excuse as part of the general madness caused by endless military lockdowns. Secondly, we had no chance in hell of meeting in person. Unfortunately, short of yet more recorded Zoom calls, this poor substitute of dadsplaining the team was the best I could do.
It’s a much happier story in 2022. Not only have most of the team shared lots of facetime together – be it in New York when I visited late last year – or at Geneva Watch Days, both times that happened, without me. But now, we’ve actually just completed a first fair together, as a whole unit, at Watches & Wonders. It was awesome. And yes, it gave us a chance to tick that unticked box – a video en masse, in the same time and place, talking about watches, each other and drinking some well-earned local beers in the process.
So, how does it go down? Well, we keep the clear and present business in the forefront, which is Watches & Wonders. Each team member answers three questions: what was our favourite watch? What was the funniest moment? And which booth at the fair would we each choose to call home if we have to live in one. Lastly, there’s a wild card. Which is more of a wild napkin. You’ll have to watch for more detail. Fair warning, it’s like day seven of a watch fair, so we’re all pretty delirious. But that’s always been a big part of the fun of these videos. There’s plenty of proof of that over the years.
Thanks for watching us, whether you need an intro or not.
