Tudor equips its Giro d’Italia squad with a new Pelagos FXD Chrono

  • Tudor equip the composite-cased Pelagos FXD Chrono with a new fixed 60-minute bezel and only 100 metres of water resistance.
  • The mostly monochromatic dial features red accents and a cycling-centric tachymeter scale.
  • Powering the watch is the Breitling B01-based MT5813 automatic, column wheel chronograph movement.

After bringing Olympian Fabian Cancellara on board last year, it was only a matter of time before Tudor brought out a cycling watch. Just last week, we finally saw that come to fruition in the form of the Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition, launched before the 2024 running of Giro d’Italia and honouring the Tudor Pro Cycling Team’s first Grand Tour entry. If the watch is at all familiar, that’s because it is – it shares its bones with Tudor’s Alinghi FXDs the brand made for their yachting team.

And if you’re into cycling at all, a carbon composite watch makes perfect sense. In their perpetual pursuit of ultimate lightness, modern racing bikes are known to be carbon works of art, and with the Tudor team’s BMC bikes weighing in at just 7kg all-in, the Pelagos FXD Chrono Cycling Edition won’t add too much weight.

The 43mm carbon case might be lightweight, but it’s not too subtle with its 14.4mm thickness and 53mm lug-to-lug span. Two important modifications have been made when compared to the previous FXD Chrono. There’s a new fixed bezel, replacing the rotating, dive-time one from the Alinghi with a more subtle, 60-minute number that accompanies a special tachymeter scale segmented for cyclists. The next is an odd one, as the water resistance drops from 200 metres to just 100. This will still be plenty for what the watch was intended to do, but I do wonder why Tudor felt the need to change it.

Beneath the screw-down caseback, you’ll find the Breitling B01-based MT5813. It’s chronometer-certified with a free-sprung silicon balance, and the chronograph is of a column wheel and vertical clutch variety, beating for up to 70 hours. Though the caseback is closed, you won’t be able to look at it too often given the strap is a one-piece construction, with black hardware.

The new FXD Chrono is priced exactly the same as the Alinghi edition, though I do feel like the design is more likely to appeal to someone who’s not necessarily a fan of the sport in question. It immediately gave me Tudor Fastrider Black Shield vibes, but, better? In any case, I still believe that it’s a really good value considering it’s a chronometer-certified, composite-cased chronograph from Tudor, for under A$8,000. In a world where retail prices are skyrocketing and brands are moving into new price segments, one could argue the FXD Chrono is still a good value.
