It’s the 1970s, and colour TV is the hot new thing, with bulging CRT displays lodged into units that were too heavy to steal. This softly rounded square aesthetic was all the rage, inspiring home electronics, fashion, and, of course, watches. Though many years have passed since, and we moved to the age of folding OLED displays and wallpaper TVs, Mido is reminiscing the times marked by Pink Floyd, Queen and Led Zeppelin with the Multifort TV Big Date.

The Time+Tide Shop is the exclusive Australian launch partner for the Multifort TV Big Date.

As its name suggests, the watch features a big date complication at 12 o’clock, while the dial transitions towards the centre with a smoked effect. At launch, three dial colours are available – a classic gradient blue, trendy smoked green and a luxurious grey-brown.

The softly squared-off case is very much reminiscent of vintage TV sets, sized at an almost symmetrical 40mm x 39.2mm. The lugs extend past the bezel only slightly, measuring in at 46.85mm, while the screw-down display caseback and crown ensure 100 metres of water resistance.

Though the geometric shape and the recent trends might suggest an integrated bracelet design, the Multifort TV Big Date is available on either a three-link steel bracelet with alternately brushed and polished links, or a coloured rubber strap. The orange-on-grey combo is certainly among the more striking in the collection.

As is common with any Swatch Group brand positioned in the entry-level luxury realm, Mido makes use of the ETA C07.6xx line of movements, more commonly known as the Powermatic 80 in the sister brand Tissot. Named the Calibre 80, it’s adjusted in three positions, using the C07.651 movement as its base, a Nivachron balance spring, and an instant change of the large date. The power reserve is 80 hours as you may expect, and the finishing is of an elaboré grade.
