IWC celebrates 75 years of the Mark series with a silver-dialled Mark XX

Borna Bošnjak

There’s no doubt that IWC is one of the most important players in the pilot’s watch game. Without digging too deep, numerous legendary models have emerged, from the very first Mark 11 issued to the RAF in 1948 to the latest Big Pilot’s Perpetual Calendar. It is that very first Mark-series watch that is being commemorated with IWC’s latest release, following up a series of colourful Mark XXs with this, a silver-plated dial with highly contrasting numerals.

The dial layout of the Mark series will be familiar to most, sporting a classic Flieger layout with the double-dot-and-triangle index at 12 o’clock. The bevelled date wheel is an update for the Mark XX, moving in line with the rest of the numerals as opposed to its off-kilter positioning on the Mark XVIII. A closer look at the new dial reveals its textured surface and silvered finish, adding a tad more visual interest than a white dial would. It’s protected by a mildly domed sapphire crystal that’s secured against sudden drops in pressure.

The 40mm steel case with its fully brushed midcase and polished bezel remains the same, featuring a screw-down crown engraved with the IWC Probus Scafusia emblem, giving the Mark XX 100 metres of water resistance. The watch is available on either a five-link, mixed-finish stainless steel bracelet or a black calfskin strap with tonal stitching. Both feature IWC’s patented EasX-CHANGE system that was specially introduced for the Pilot’s line, allowing you to quickly switch both straps and buckles.

Beneath a solid screw-down caseback, the Mark XX hides the IWC 32111 calibre. Produced by Richemont’s in-house manufacturer ValFleurier and its variants used across the Richemont group, the 32111 features some impressive specifications, namely the five-day power reserve and silicon escapement. It beats at 28,800 vph and sports a double-pawl winding system.
