The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Bi-Colour indulges in two-tone sophistication

  • The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Bi-Colour introduces a touch of glamour to the iconic sports watch.
  • It’s been launched with the help of Omega’s latest ambassador, Barry Keoghan.
  • The two references showcase Omega’s Moonshine Gold and Sedna Gold alongside steel, exploring the characters of their differing tones.

I would definitely consider Omega to be a classical watch brand in that it takes itself quite seriously, even when jovial releases like the Silver Snoopy indulge in a sense of playfulness. But with Barry Keoghan’s appointment as the brand’s latest ambassador and his recent androgynous takes on red carpet wristwear and colourful lead role in Saltburn, it’s clear the brand has its ear to the ground as far as trends go. His naming as a “Friend of the Brand” also came with an announcement of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Bi-Colour, with two, two-tone variants of a more glamorous take on the classic Speedy.

Omega finally released a production model of the Speedmaster Professional with a white dial earlier this year, and these new Bi-Colour editions do feel like they’re somewhat riding on that wave of optimistic, dressier Speedmasters. It’s also a bit of a callback to the ‘80s and ‘90s, when there were more experimental releases based around precious metals and steel. The two new references don’t just swap the tone of their gold around either, with each one having its own distinct character. The most traditional of the two-tones would have to be the version in steel and Moonshine Gold, which is Omega’s yellow gold alloy. Between the case and the dial, the silver theme makes up the majority of the watch, with the yellow gold serving as a highlight on the dial details, sub-dials, and the centre-links of the bracelet. It’s sophisticated while still being versatile, and not overly flashy like a solid gold model.

Alternatively, the steel and Sedna Gold (rose gold) version takes on a life of its own. The whole dial is bathed in a rosy hue, while the black sub-dials match the ceramic with Ceragold bezels in dark contrast. The tone of the gold also makes it more easily distinguishable as a dressier watch, and may be more suited to formal occasions stylistically. Still, there’s nothing stopping you from treating them the same as any other sports chronograph, as it retains many of  the same specifications as the regular Moonwatch. The case is 42mm in diameter, with a 47.5mm lug-to-lug length and a total thickness of 13.2mm. It’s water resistant to 50 metres, so it’s not really recommended for prolonged exposures to water.

Powering the watch is the Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, which is manually wound and offers a gorgeous view from the sapphire display caseback. It harkens back to the Lemania 1873, which is the same base that powered the watches worn during the Apollo 11 mission, though thoroughly upgraded with the likes of a Co-Axial escapement and anti-magnetic components. The 50-hour power reserve and the 3Hz beat rate aren’t super impressive by modern standards, but the 3861 more than makes up for it with METAS certification for a precision of 0/+5 seconds per day and magnetic resistance up to 15,000 Gauss.
