Zenith goes totally tropical with its new vintage-inspired Chronomaster Revival A384

Tom Austin
  • Zenith unveils a fan-favourite Chronomaster Revival with a vintage-inspired tropical dial, featuring the legendary ladder bracelet.
  • Faithfully reproducing the proportions of the 1969 original, Zenith used the historical blueprints to create the 37mm, stainless steel, tonneau-shaped case for the Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical.
  • Inside beats the famed 5Hz high-beat El Primero 400 calibre, delivering a 50-hour power reserve while precisely measuring time to within 1/10th of a second.

If you’ve ever spent any time in hardcore watch collector circles, you’ll know that pretty much anything with a tropical dial is instantly elevated to legendary status. That unintentional characteristic of uneven patina, often caused by bleaching from exposure to natural ultraviolet light, heat, and humidity, and sometimes by unstable or faulty dial chemistry, has come to be revered by collectors worldwide for a variety of reasons. Something else that has gained quite an affinity among collectors is Zenith’s Chronomaster Revival, a watch so faithfully reproduced to resemble the 1969 original that, at first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking it is the older watch. So, what happens when you combine the two? OK, so this isn’t a “real” tropical dial, as such, but it sure looks like one. Zenith just took the covers off its latest Chronomaster Revival, the A384 Tropical, and it looks awesome.

1960s and 70s designs have been a hot topic in the watch world for a while now, so it’s easy to see why the Chronomaster Revival is so attractive. And as far as reproductions go, this model goes as far as possible, with Zenith even using the original blueprints to produce the case to the original specifications, but with modern intentions. Its iconic tonneau-shaped case is sized appropriately, at 37mm wide and 12.6mm thick and features an all-brushed stainless steel finish with a touch of polishing in all the right places along the case flanks. Protruding from the right side are vintage-style chronograph pushers, which some might argue look out of place, but that’s the point; it looks classic.

What’s attached to the case is just as important for this model, as it showcases the legendary ladder bracelet, originally designed by Gay Frères back in 1969. This isn’t the first time it’s shown up on a modern iteration of the Revival series, but nevertheless, alongside this new tropical-style dial, it looks superb. The intermittent “missing link” style is unique to this line and instantly recognisable, having been paired with several old El Primeros back in the day. This new model’s lightweight ladder bracelet is closed with a foldover clasp featuring a five-step micro-adjustment to find the perfect fit.

The warm, golden-brown tones of aged, tropical dials have been captured perfectly on the A384 Tropical, starting with a white-lacquered base and building on it with brown-toned sub-dials in a classic “chocolate panda” configuration. This brown hue continues into the tachymeter scale that frames the dial, and pairs beautifully with the Super-LumiNova treated to look like “old radium” used inside the faceted, applied hour markers. Yes, ok, it oozes faux-patina here, and by 2026, I thought we were past this, but I have to say, I think this gets a pass, as it’s just so close to the original look. Lastly, a striking red chronograph hand contrasts with the rest of the dial, another nod to the El Primeros of old.

And this wouldn’t be an El Primero without that awesome high-beat chronograph beating away inside. This model features the 400 Calibre, which is Zenith’s most faithful descendant of the original 3019 PHC introduced in 1969. Of course, it’s fully developed and manufactured in-house, incorporating 278 components to deliver a 50-hour power reserve, all while beating at that legendary 36,000 vibrations per hour, enabling precise measurement to 1/10th of a second as soon as you push that chronograph start/stop pusher. Controversially, this model features a date at 4:30, it’s worth noting that this is how the originals were specified, so any arguments against it are quickly rebuffed. This automatic chronograph movement is pleasantly finished and visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback, showcasing the signature skeletonised rotor featuring the Zenith five-pointed star.
