Wren teams up with Ben’s Watches once more for a new red-hot collaboration, the Diver One Obsidian

Wren may still be a relatively young independent brand, but its founder has spent years immersed in the watch world. Craig Karger first built an audience through Wrist Enthusiast before launching Wren in 2023, bringing that same enthusiast-first perspective to a collection of Swiss-made dive watches designed around sensible proportions, everyday practicality and straightforward mechanical reliability. The Diver One has become the cornerstone of Wren’s collection, with the Obsidian marking the second collaboration between Karger and watch-social-media sensation Ben Cook.
Ben Cook has become one of Instagram’s best-known independent watch creators, while also co-hosting Wrist Enthusiast Radio with Karger, making the partnership a natural extension of an existing relationship. Their first effort, the Diver One Magma, introduced a striking molten orange fumé dial alongside the Diver One’s proven hardware, creating a watch that stood apart visually without changing the formula underneath. Now, the pair has returned with the Diver One Obsidian. This second collaboration takes the Magma’s distinctive dial and surrounds it with an entirely different, much darker aesthetic. It is less a replacement and more an alternative interpretation of the Diver One platform, one that leans into darker finishes and textures while allowing that glowing orange dial to become an even stronger focal point.
Apart from its new blacked-out, DLC appearance, the case itself remains unchanged, measuring 41mm across, 47mm lug-to-lug and 13.3mm thick. Those proportions continue to place it firmly within the modern sweet spot for an everyday dive watch, balancing wrist presence with wearability. A sapphire box crystal sits above the dial, while a screw-down crown and 200 metres of water resistance ensure the Diver One retains the credentials expected of a proper tool watch. The black bezel now complements the DLC-coated case, giving the watch a much darker overall character without changing the underlying Diver One design.
While the Obsidian’s dial is the defining visual feature of the watch, alongside the blackened metal hardware, it’s now even more vibrant. Its bold fumé finish transitions from a bright molten orange at the centre to deep brown, almost black around the edge, creating a sense of depth that immediately draws the eye. The colour palette was originally inspired by cooling lava, and against the black-coated case, it becomes even more dramatic. Applied indices and broad hands keep the display highly legible, while the distinctive black lume returns, glowing with a coal-like effect in darkness that continues the volcanic theme.
Inside is the same Sellita SW200 automatic movement found throughout the Diver One collection. Operating at 4Hz with a 38-hour power reserve, hacking seconds and a quickset date, it remains a dependable choice that prioritises reliability and ease of servicing over novelty. For a watch intended to be worn daily rather than admired from a watch box, it is an entirely fitting calibre, while also integrating a hacking seconds feature and a quickset date for some quick functionality.
Wren includes two ways to wear the Obsidian straight out of the box. The first is a matching black DLC-coated bracelet that completes the case’s moody, purposeful look, while the second is a fitted orange FKM rubber strap that picks up the brightest tones of the dial. Switching between the two changes the watch’s personality considerably, giving owners the choice between an understated, tactical appearance and something bolder without compromising the cohesive design.
The Diver One Obsidian builds on a collaboration that already had a clear identity without abandoning what made it successful. It keeps the approachable proportions, dependable specifications, and enthusiast-focused design of the original Diver One while presenting the platform in a noticeably different light, proving that sometimes a change in finish is enough to give a familiar watch an entirely new personality. The first batch of Wren x Ben’s Watches Diver One Obsidian will be limited to 100 pieces, and the first 30 will be available in person at the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago on the 10th-12th July. The next 20 watches will be available from the Time+Tide Watch Discovery Studio in New York City on July 13th, and this will be your opportunity to pick up your Obsidian from Craig and Ben in person.
