WATCHES & WONDERS: TAG Heuer follow up LVMH Watch Week with a whole lot more

D.C. Hannay

Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders is the biggest watch fair of the year and, with nearly 40 brands presenting, there is a ton of ground to cover. So for your convenience, we’re offering a quick overview of each brand’s new novelties – touching on each new reference or collection and their headlining points. Stay tuned throughout the week for deeper coverage, some of which will include videos, live pics, and our hands-on perspective. But for now let’s run through each of the new watches – here are the Tag Heuer 2022 novelties of Watches & Wonders Geneva 2022.

Watches & Wonders is back, baby, both in-person and virtually, and TAG Heuer is throwing some real heat with new iterations of the Aquaracer, a new Carrera/Porsche collab, and the updated return of a classic special edition Monaco. Let’s jump right in, shall we?

Aquaracer Professional 300 Orange Diver

First up, the current Aquaracer, now available with a healthy dose of vitamin C. The new Professional 300 Orange Diver returns the sunny hue to the range, throwing back to an early version of the original Aquaracer. Orange is a classic dial colour for divers, and this one looks the business with its black ceramic bezel insert, black handset, and applied black indices, all filled in with bright white Super-LumiNova for the utmost in undersea visibility against the ribbed orange dial texture. Specs are otherwise similar to the rest of the 300 range, with a brushed/polished stainless 43mm case, stainless three-link bracelet with push-button clasp and dive extension, Calibre 5 automatic movement, flat sapphire crystal, 6 o’clock date with circular cyclops, 12-sided bezel, screw-down crown and caseback good for 300 metres of water resistance. Orange is once again the new black, and TAG‘s modern Aquaracer looks good in the iconic diver colourway.

Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph

Here’s one I didn’t see coming: A solar-powered 40mm Aquaracer. The Professional 200 Solargraph utilises the same movement technology as Citizen’s Eco-Drive models (supplied by La Joux-Perret), a first for a Swiss company, and will run for around six months on a single charge. Between that, the Goldilocks 40mm case size, and 200 metres of water resistance, you’ve got a strong candidate for a set-and-forget daily driver. But my favourite feature is the stealthed-out black DLC case with a bezel insert forged from lumed carbon fibre. That’s right, there’s green Super-LumiNova impregnated into the carbon, contrasting nicely with the blue of the numbered index. In the daylight, the effect is akin to Damascus steel, but those swirls really come to life when the lights go down. Another jolt of colour on this black beauty comes via the polar blue second hand popping out from the sunray black dial, disrupting (in a good way) the otherwise tactical vibe. This unique outlier might very well be my favourite among the new models.

Aquaracer Professional 1000 Superdiver

Here’s where we go deep, quite literally. The new titanium Professional 1000 Superdiver is a straight-up beast. This 1000-metre professional tool, ISO-certified for saturation diving, harks back to the spirit of the uber-cool 1000m Diver and Super Professional models from the ‘80s, but with a design language in line with the modern 300-metre model. Naturally, the case dimensions are going to be bigger than the 300, at 45mm, but the height of 15.75mm is completely reasonable for a 1000-metre diver. Let’s face it, there are taller watches with much less capability. Besides the larger case dimensions, you’ll note the orange/black ceramic bezel insert, a rectangular helium escape valve, the highly visible and mammoth-sized arrow hour hand (which glows green versus the minute hand’s blue), and the addition of a crown guard. Inside the case beats the TAG/Heuer-exclusive Calibre TH30-30 by Kenissi, which is COSC-certified. The whole package comes in a custom waterproof case, complete with rescue diving torch. Truly, the Professional 1000 Superdiver is a serious piece of kit, and looks every bit the part.

Carrera X Porsche Limited Edition

W&W 2022 marks the introduction of the second iteration of Porsche’s Carrera collaboration, and this one changes lanes from the red design cues of the inaugural version to Porsche’s own racing yellow. This limited edition is based on the Carrera Sport chrono, which utilises Calibre 02, an automatic column wheel movement with a vertical clutch and an impressive 80-hour power reserve. The 44mm case is DLC-coated steel, featuring a ceramic fixed tachy bezel, a screwdown exhibition caseback, “asphalt” textured subdials, and that signature yellow accenting the bezel, crown, chrono hand, and subdials, as well as the stitching on the textile-patterned black leather strap. You’ll want to be supercar quick, however: The edition is limited to just 500 pieces.

Monaco Gulf Special Edition

tag heuer aquaracer carrera monaco

Last, but certainly not least, TAG/Heuer is bringing back a beloved special edition, the Monaco Gulf, done up in the familiar blue and orange livery of one of motor racing’s most legendary teams. The new version differs in a few key ways from the sold-out edition of several years ago. Firstly, the movement is TAG’s Calibre 02, as opposed to the Calibre 11, which moves the crown to the right side of the 39mm case at 3 o’clock. The dial indices are arranged in the sunburst pattern of modern Monacos instead of the horizontal orientation of vintage models. The dial differs in other ways, too, with a brighter royal blue replacing the more subdued darker blue of the 2007 original, and the subdials are opaline silver as opposed to white, with orange/turquoise accents and orange hands. The bold turquoise and orange racing stripes along the right side of the dial are thinner, yet brighter, lending a more contemporary appearance. The handset trades the red of the original for rhodium plating in this edition, with a bright orange chrono hand providing a nice contrast. And in a cool Easter egg, the 12 o’clock indice pays tribute to the number 60 of the Porsche/Gulf race car. All told, it’s a welcome update for those that missed out the first time around.
