WATCHES & WONDERS: Panerai diversifies the Submersible range
Borna BošnjakEditor’s Note: Watches & Wonders means a bombardment of fresh releases, so we’re offering a quick overview of each brand’s new novelties – touching on each new reference or collection and their headlining points. Stay tuned throughout the week for deeper coverage, some of which will include live pics and our hands-on perspective. But for now let’s run through each of the new watches – here are the Panerai novelties of Watches & Wonders 2022.
Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro
A new middle ground for the Submersible, the QuarantaQuattro will fit between the 42mm and 47mm sizes with its 44mm diameter. The planned expansion comes in the form of seven different references and is composed of a variety of materials, from carbotech to steel to eSteel and ceramic. With one of three steel models, Panerai is looking to celebrate the success of the Luna Rossa Team, winner of the Prada Cup, with Prada’s iconic Linea Rossa insignia in a limited, 1500-piece edition. The other two steel models follow in Panerai’s traditional footsteps, with steel bezels and monochromatic dials, with only a flash of blue on the PAM01229. Boldly outlined skeletonised hands further aid legibility, as they contrast well against their respective backdrops.

Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel™
With properties identical to conventional steel, but made of recycled materials, eSteel™ makes up 72g of the QuarantaQuattro’s hefty 137g frame (or 52%, if you prefer). Technically a completely new material for the Submersible range, the three colourways will be exclusive to Panerai boutiques and panerai.com. Colour-matched to the dials are gloss ceramic bezels, which are also a first for Panerai. The dials are distinctly Panerai, but finished in a beautiful gradient tone that darkens as it approaches the 6 o’clock marker. The controversial eSteel™ logo makes a return to the dial, but also to the copyrighted crown guard system as an engraving. All of the models are accompanied by two recycled material straps that make a further push towards bettering sustainability.
