Born in 1972, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is known for being the original luxury stainless-steel sports watch. The line has since grown and evolved, with multiple collections making up the Royal Oak name. The Offshore was developed to speak to the modern consumer, who at the time of its launch was skewing towards larger pieces that catered to an even more active lifestyle. With size tastes now returning to tamer dimensions, Audemars Piguet has redesigned the Offshore 43 Flyback Chronograph to speak to those who like larger watches as well as those unsure about them with their most wrist-approachable take on the collection.

Here, the refined design is more ergonomic, making its 100 metre water-resistant case that’s 43mm in diameter and 14.4mm thick, the most wearable Offshore 43 ever made. Its heightened level of robustness offers greater “daily wearer” capabilities, making it the Royal Oak family model to inquire about if you want increased durability on the wrist. That being said, the Offshore 43 Flyback Chronograph receives the same level of luxurious attention to detail with its incredibly executed mixed finishes – a predominant vertical brush accompanied by polished accents to the outer bezel facets and tapered bevels to the shoulders of the case and lugs.

Not only is the Offshore 43 Flyback Chronograph more ergonomic than ever, it has also become more versatile. The newly introduced interchangeable strap system allows you to quickly remove and affix either of the two bundled rubber straps, typically one in a dial-matching/complimentary tone and another in black or other muted neutral tone. This allows you to play with the aesthetic of your watch, creating different looks for different moments and settings you decide to wear it in.

Inside the watch, visible via an exhibition caseback, is the in-house caliber 4401 originally introduced in the Code 11:59 chronograph watches. The vertical-clutch column wheel chronograph movement has a very respectable power reserve of 70 hours. It is exquisitely finished to a very high degree, with Côtes de Genève, traits tirés, circular graining, and a blackened 22K pink-gold winding mass – all of which are able to be admired through the sapphire caseback.
