VIDEO: ABOUT TIME with Mark Bouris

Andrew McUtchen

In the first of a regular Time+Tide video series called ‘About Time’, where influential and aspirational people talk about how they manage time and their relationship with time, we sat down with Mark Bouris in the (extraordinary) Chairman’s Villa of Crown Casino, Melbourne. Thanks to Natalia at IWC and LK Boutique for making it happen and to Mark for not mincing words.

Mark Bouris has a kindly face on TV. His look, usually a squinted, warm smile, with pressed white shirt open at the neck, says, “I know you, friend.” But his eye contact in real life is less kindly and much more diamond-like; it’s focused to a pinpoint. Which means your comment, question or conversation starter had better be onpoint.

This is why, being asked by your cameraman to make some small talk before the cameras roll is a challenging place to start with Mark. This is the guy that hosted The Apprentice, so why not start there? I hand him a Time+Tide business card. “How can I turn my business into a global watch media powerhouse?” Mark smiles, and it’s the warm squinty one from TV. “If I knew that, I probably wouldn’t tell you.” We laugh, though my laugh is sad, because Mark sold one of his companies for half a billion dollars – I was hoping for an answer. “If I knew that, I’d be doing it.”
