Venezianico, run by brothers Alberto and Alessandro Morelli, is clearly a family affair, with their greatest design influence being their hometown of Venice, Italy. The brand’s logo is taken from the cross that sits atop the clock tower in St. Mark’s Square, imparting Venetian influence on every watch that Venezianico makes. While the bulk of the product lineup consists of more entry-level timepieces, utilising movements from Swiss and Japanese suppliers, Venezianico’s latest release is a celebration of the Morelli brothers’ pride in their heritage. With a highly decorated movement with high-end features, a hand-engraved dial, and production of both completed in Italy, the Redentore Utopia II is an upscale offering from the brand that brings more recognition to what the brand and Italian watchmaking are capable of.

The first Redentore Utopia released last year unveiled the brand’s first in-house movement, the calibre V 5000. Designed in collaboration with the technical director of OISA, Fausto Berizzi, and Venezianico’s head of product development Andrea Menegazzo, the V 5000 was not only developed in-house, but manufactured by OISA in Italy. Building upon the V 5000, the new Redentore Utopia II uses the V 5001. The same manually-wound movement architecture with a split gear train, a variable-inertia balance wheel adjustable via four masselottes, a dual-anchor balance bridge, a KIF anti-shock system, and an anti-loosening screw remains from the V 5000.

The updates for the V 5001 movement include a higher level of decoration, featuring radial c’ôtes de Genève’, polished anglage, hand-executed micro-perlage on the mainplate, double snailing on the wheels, and étirage on the balance bridge. This is all topped off with a 24k gold-plated finish on the movement to make these finishes really stand out.

The technical features of the movement are no slouch either, with 60-hours of power reserve, 19 jewels, a 25,200 bph beat rate, and regulated to +/- 3 seconds per day, all in a 3.5mm thin package. The V 5001 is a movement Venezianico can be proud of.

Another carryover from the first Redentore Utopia is the hand-engraved guilloché dial done by the Renzetti family. While the first was done by Andrea Renzetti, the Redentore Utopia II is done by Andrea’s daughter, Linda Renzetti. Each brass dial is completed by hand on 19th-century lathes, with the dial design inspired by the constant movement of water in the Venetian lagoon, resulting in an outward radiating spiral and wave pattern on the dial.

The dial is either treated with a gold (Alpha) or graphite (Beta) galvanic finish. Considering the amount of handwork involved in both the movement and the dials, each watch will inherently be slightly unique, emphasising the level of craftsmanship involved and adding to the overall charm of the Redentore Utopia II.

Venezianico Redentore Utopia II Alpha

The case of the Rendentore Utopia II is made of 316L stainless steel, is water resistant to 30 meters, and measures 38mm in diameter, 44.2mm lug-to-lug, and 8.9mm thick. The dial is covered with a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, and there is a sapphire crystal display back for admiring the calibre V 5001. The leather straps are also handcrafted in Italy and feature a stainless steel buckle and quick-release spring bars.

Closing thoughts

Venezianico Redentora Utopia II Beta Wrist

With most of Venezianico’s offerings being priced below $2,000, the Utopia series is definitely a step up, but the extra costs seem to be put in the right places. With a hand-decorated movement with high-end features and a hand-engraved guilloché dial, the new Rendentore Utopia II seems like a whole lot of watch for the money. The depth of storytelling that the brand goes into on the website and in its press materials displays the great effort taken to produce these timepieces, which, to me, further highlights the value that Venezianico is offering.
