Does a sunburst dial defeat the retro purpose of the new burgundy Tudor Black Bay 58?
Buffy Acacia- The Tudor Black Bay 58 has been given a burgundy makeover of the bezel and dial.
- It’s the first Black Bay 58 to have a sunburst dial, significantly modernising the aesthetic.
- Tudor’s five-link bracelet is also an available option, in addition to the standard three-link or rubber choices.
Tudor’s Black Bay 58 is almost more legendary than Tudor as a brand at this point. And while it’s great to see that its success hasn’t prevented Tudor from exploring other varied releases, it’s no surprise to see new variations on the Black Bay 58 being released year-on-year. For Watches & Wonders 2025, the new Black Bay 58 includes a gorgeous burgundy dial, celebrating a shade of red the watch has been begging for. But does its new sunburst dial ruin its vintage appeal?
The regular Tudor Black Bay range was graced with burgundy bezels back in 2023, replacing the discontinued Heritage Black Bay that used the same colour scheme back when Tudor still used ETA movements. And while that mix of red bezel and black dial oozed sophistication, 2024’s Year of the Dragon brought about a red dial trend that hasn’t yet been shaken. Using a red dial for the Black Bay 58 is a significant move from Tudor though, because it substantially modernises the look of the watch. Granted, its popularity has had a lot to do with the 58’s modest case sizing, but the majority of purchases likely gravitate towards it because of the vintage charm. The sunburst finish of the new references is powerful, and the large luminous markers really stand out from a distance.
The exact shade of burgundy is a forgiving one, because its depth and darkness avoids connotations of summer fun in favour of a mood more akin to jazz lounges. The dusky hue is echoed nicely in the anodised aluminium bezel, too. Overall, the case is the same Black Bay 58 case we’ve come to love, with a 39mm diameter and a wrist-friendly lug-to-lug of 47mm. The 11.7mm thickness also grants comfort without sacrificing the 200 metres of water resistance which legitimises its place as a true dive watch, with a screw-down crown to seal it in.
The watch is powered by the Kenissi calibre MT5400-U, featuring a 65-hour power reserve and automatic winding with a 4Hz beat rate. It’s the first non-GMT Black Bay 58 to be made a Master Chronometer as certified by METAS, which has slowly been replacing the COSC certification Tudor previously offered. This is also the first Tudor Black Bay 58 to be made available on a five-link stainless steel bracelet that debuted last year, and Tudor fans have clamoured for it to fit more of the catalogue.
