High complications are not something we would typically associate with Panerai – however that could all be about to change with the introduction of their first annual calendar movement. Their lineup for the 2023 Watches & Wonders fair seems to be a big celebration for the Radiomir, and this ultra-luxury offering is one of the grandest ways that they could honour the model. The Panerai Radiomir Annual Calendar impresses on all fronts and further expands its catalogue of complicated models.
While the term complication does imply a certain level of inherent complexity, if Panerai are known for anything it’s keeping legibility as their first priority. The immediacy of the Radiomir dial is very much intact, with clear, luminous markers sunken into the sandwich dial and fencepost hands sitting above. The day and date display sits within a bevelled window, while the months are printed onto a disk which rotates around the perimeter of the dial.
The only catch is that the abbreviations are taken from the Italian calendar, so you will need to become somewhat bilingual if you aren’t already. The dials are resplendent in their sunburst and fumé colour schemes, with the platinum case paired with a cherry red colour and the 18k gold version in blue.
The cases, produced from Panerai’s Platinumtech and Goldtech allots, are in the 45mm size making the Panerai Radiomir Annual Calendar perfectly wearable on an average wrist. The cushion case is brushed on the main surface, allowing the polished bezel to gleam in contrast. The new movement is the calibre P.9010/AC, which reaches a 72-hour power reserve while beating at a smooth 4Hz. It’s an automatic movement, so you can truly just set the time once per year if kept on a winder or worn regularly. It’s also visible through a sapphire display caseback.
