When it comes to adding visual depth to a dial, the watch industry tends to rely on a few tried-and-tested methods, such as engine-turned guilloché or grand feu enamel. But while machines are great at simulating these finishes, traditional hand-applied techniques (true Métiers d’Art) still sit in a league of their own, precisely because no two results are ever exactly the same. The new Gerald Charles Masterlink Atelier Edition leans entirely into this artisanal approach. Instead of using an industrial press, the brand has introduced a series of hand-hammered dials to its signature asymmetrical case. It’s a time-consuming process, but it ensures that every single dial carries the unrepeatable touch of the artisan who made it.
Before examining the dial, it’s worth looking at the architectural foundation of the watch itself. In 2000, legendary watch designer Gérald Genta founded the Gerald Charles Maison. His final major contribution to case design arrived with the “Maestro,” an asymmetrical shape defined by a sweeping “smile” curve at 6 o’clock. Genta always championed the idea that a high-end steel sports watch could be just as prestigious as a gold or platinum one, and this unusual case shape became the canvas for his final vision. The brand reimagined the Maestro silhouette to launch the Masterlink in 2024, squaring off the top proportions and creating a slimmer, modern evolution. Now, the new Atelier Edition brings the focus right back to hand-crafted texture and finishing.
Measuring a highly wearable 38mm by 38mm, the square-ish case of the new Masterlink Atelier Edition is constructed from 316L stainless steel and features an interplay of high-polished bevels and fine satin-brushed surfaces across its 31 distinct components. Despite this multi-piece construction, the case profile is kept remarkably slim at 7.99mm. Crucially, the engineering team managed to integrate a right-hand screw-down crown, adorned with an elegant Clous de Paris finish, without altering the overall width or height of the case side. It’s a clever bit of engineering that guarantees a solid 100 metres of water resistance without bulking up that slim, elegant profile.
The focal point of the Masterlink Atelier Edition is the captivating hand-hammered dial surface – a finish that is executed by an experienced artisan at the Maison’s Geneva workshop. Gerald Charles deliberately selected Maillechort as the base material for these dials, often known as German silver – an alloy consisting of copper, nickel, and zinc. Maillechort might be notoriously tough to work with compared to standard watchmaking brass, but its density makes it perfect for hand-hammering. An artisan strikes the blank hundreds of times to create a faceted, irregular texture that scatters light in every direction, making it feel far more dynamic than a standard sunray dial. Because it’s done entirely by hand, every single piece is unique. To let this hand-worked surface do the talking, Gerald Charles has stripped away all applied hour markers, leaving just the central hour and minute hands to dictate the time. The watch is available in three limited colourways: Golden Rose, Rhodium, and Golden Yellow.
Powering the watch is the ultra-thin Manufacture Calibre GCA 1000, measuring just 2.67mm thick. To keep the movement this slim without sacrificing everyday performance, it uses an offset micro-rotor to deliver a solid 50-hour power reserve. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and features hacking seconds for precise time-setting, alongside Incabloc shock protection. Through the sapphire caseback, you get a clear view of traditional movement finishing, including Côtes de Genève on the bridges, circular graining, and snailing – all of which act as a nice contrast to the artisanal techniques found dial-side.
One particular challenge in developing the Masterlink Atelier Edition is the integrated steel bracelet, which had to be built around the Masterlink’s unusual asymmetrical shape. Because the bottom of the case has that distinct “smile” curve while the top is perfectly straight, the links had to match. At 6 o’clock, the central links follow the curve before slowly straightening out towards the clasp, whereas the top links shoot straight off the flat edge. The idea actually comes from the brand’s archives, specifically the Sarawak – a bespoke watch Genta designed for the Royal Family of Sarawak back in 2007, kept secret until 2024. The modern Masterlink brings that concept into the present with an incredibly clean construction. There are no visible screws anywhere. The bracelet features micro-adjustments for a perfect fit, and fastens with a hidden butterfly clasp.
