INTRODUCING: TAG Heuer’s Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition will put you on the fairway to heaven

Last week, TAG Heuer’s Managing Director of their Connected Watch, Teddy Florent, shared a remarkable statistic with Time+Tide. According to the brand’s research, he told us, 20 per cent of TAG Heuer Connected Watch wearers play golf – more than any other sport.  This insightful snippet informs the brand’s latest release.  Hot on the heels of the new Calibre E4 42mm and 45mm, TAG Heuer is releasing the Connected Watch Calibre E4 – Golf Edition, their next-generation golf smartwatch.

Based on the Calibre E4 45mm which we covered extensively, the improvements in design and wearability along with a host of new smart features have the E4 Golf Edition set to become the most successful golf model yet.

New golf-specific features

The headlining new feature is automated swing detection, which uses the built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to track the shot from the tee area. The watch doesn’t need to be activated manually, and all the data is captured for review in the app. At the time of writing, this feature is limited to tracking only the first shot on each hole – though, it is the most important one, according to TAG Heuer ambassador and golf pro Tommy Fleetwood. With automatic shot tracking, the Driving Range feature is fed more data, and can now generate a heat map of where the previous shots have landed. This also allows the app’s club recommendation feature to be more accurate than before.

A redesigned interface makes it easier to navigate the high-resolution 2D course maps, giving you an insight into the hazards and distances of more than 40,000 golf courses worldwide. The 3D maps on the iOS app get an improvement as well, allowing the users to create videos of their greatest shots for the ultimate bragging rights (or bloopers’ reel dependent on how you play).

TAG Heuer also listened to requests from existing Golf Edition watch users, who wanted to see both the distance to target and distance of the tracking shot at the same time. By using the crown, the user can move the map up and down to see the layout of the hole and press down to see important information such as par and distance to the start and end of greens.

Lots of dial customisation

The new Golf Edition introduces some exclusive golf-inspired faces that weave the trademark green colour into their designs. With a simple three-hander layout and a golf ball-like dimpled backdrop, it mimics the texture of the strap for a uniform look.

When you’re not swinging away, however, Tag Heuer redesigned some of the classic Connected faces to match the look of the Golf Edition better, once again integrating lush green accents.

Slimmer, new generation case

With a 45mm DLC-coated titanium case and a lug-to-lug of over 50mm, the Connected E4 is not a small watch. However, through refining the case profile, sculpting and curving the lugs, TAG Heuer has managed to make this a wearable watch, even at 15.3mm thick. The pushers are also sleeker and offer the user a more mechanical click, while the crown grows in size for easier manoeuvring. The 1.39-inch OLED display sits under a sapphire crystal and is surrounded by a graduated ceramic bezel. The markings of the bezel correspond to 18 holes on a golf course, and offer an at-a-glance scorecard, indicating whether the player is below, on or above par.

To complement the dimpled white strap, the buckle has been redesigned to include a magnetic ball marker that’s built into the buckle. It’s used to mark the position of your golf ball on the green, enabling you to pick up your own ball and allow other players to putt without having their line to the hole obstructed. Embossed with a grippy TAG Heuer shield, the marker easily slides out of the buckle, and can be reattached just as easily. In case you lose it or need an extra one, TAG Heuer also includes an additional marker in the case. Rounding out the offering, TAG Heuer includes an additional black strap in the box for extra versatility, playing into the Connected E4’s quick-release strap system.

Tech features

Apart from the aforementioned golf-specific improvements, the Calibre E4 Golf Edition offers the same 30% battery improvement as on the regular E4 45mm. This means a full day of battery power, with up to five hours on the course, using the Calibre E4’s built-in golf functions. The Snapdragon 4100+ processor is tasked with churning out all the data, while Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity ensures rapid transfer speeds. The golf edition has a full complement of sensors, including heart rate, compass, accelerometer… the list goes on. Worth noting is that the automatic shot tracking is currently exclusive to the Calibre E4 Golf Edition, but will be added to TAG Heuer’s Apple Watch app at a later date.
