TAG Heuer releases new Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph in full titanium and Gulf livery

The Gulf livery is one of the most iconic in motor racing. The combination of light blue and orange is destined to make just about any automotive racing enthusiast weak in the knees. Gulf’s association with motor racing is just as storied as TAG Heuer’s, making the two brands’ collaboration one of the most logical partnerships in the watch world. For TAG Heuer’s fourth watch released in partnership with Gulf Oil, TAG Heuer gives us a new Formula 1 automatic chronograph clad in blue and orange in a lightweight package.
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf features a black opaline dial with blue and orange stripes on the 3 o’clock side of the dial, which extend into the rehaut where the seconds track is printed. Continuing with the right-hand side of the dial, there is a white date window with black printing at 3 o’clock. The chronograph hours, minutes, and seconds hands are done in Gulf Orange, with a Gulf blue hand for the running seconds. The perimeter of the dial has a lacquered blue track and orange accents for the hour markers. The hour markers are applied, rhodium-plated, and filled with white Super-LumiNova. The central hour and minute hands are skeletonised, finished with black lacquer and have a Super-LumiNova section towards the tip. Covering the dial is a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.
Moving on to the case, the fixed tachymetre bezel is made of forged carbon and features the Gulf demarcation to the right of 12 o’clock. Below the bezel is an orange joint, a fun design detail that adds a pop of colour, and has been a design cue across the current generation of Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph models. The case itself is made of grade 2 titanium, is entirely sandblasted, and measures 44mm in diameter. The chronograph pushers and screw-down crown are also made of sandblasted grade 2 titanium and are then DLC-coated black, with the crown featuring an orange lacquer accent. With the screw-down crown and screw-down grade 2 titanium caseback, the case is water resistant to 200 metres. The caseback is engraved with both the Gulf and TAG Heuer logos, and with the specs around the perimeter.
For the modern iteration of the Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph line, I think most of us are used to seeing this model on a rubber strap. However, TAG Heuer has other Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph models with grade 2 titanium bracelets, and they have chosen to equip this Gulf collaborative model with one. Integrated into the case, the bracelet has a fully sandblasted finish, a fold-over clasp with double safety push-buttons and an adjustment link extension.
As with other Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph models, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf has the automatic-winding Calibre 16. Based on the Valjoux 7750, the Calibre 16 has a 48-hour power reserve, operates at 28,800 bph, and has a 12-hour chronograph in addition to the time and date.
Even though Gulf continues to sponsor racing teams, the Gulf brand and livery are associated with many historic cars and drivers. Because of Gulf Oil’s historic racing association, it feels like many other watches that take inspiration from the iconic blue-orange colourway lean on heritage designs.
