The new TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph celebrates 50 years on the racing line

It’s hard to think of a watch with a more cinematically compelling origin story than the Heuer Monza. In 1971, Heuer became the Official Timekeeper of Scuderia Ferrari – the first watchmaker to partner with a Formula 1 team – and in doing so embedded itself into the DNA of the sport’s most mythologised marque. Four years later, Niki Lauda secured Ferrari its first Drivers’ Championship since 1964, and Heuer celebrated the achievement the only way a watchmaker knows how: with a chronograph. Introduced in 1976 and named after the hallowed Autodromo Nazionale, the Monza immediately stood apart. Its character was unmistakable, and its motorsport credibility was beyond question. Half a century on, TAG Heuer is marking that milestone with the TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph – a 500-piece limited edition that builds upon the contemporary Monza Flyback introduced in 2023 while drawing design inspiration directly from the original 1976 reference.
It’s the rare anniversary watch that actually earns the occasion. The most immediate statement is the case material. Forged carbon – the same stuff you’ll find reinforcing the chassis of the cars that now race at Monza – gives the 42mm cushion-shaped case a distinctive marbled texture, ensuring no two examples are identical. It’s lighter than steel, stronger than most things, and looks appropriately serious on the wrist. The carbon fixed bezel continues the material story, and together they give the watch a presence that feels genuinely connected to the motorsport world it references rather than merely cosplaying it.
The black matte dial takes its cues from 1976 without being slavishly retro about it. Matte black chronograph counters contrast cleanly against the main dial surface for sharp legibility, while carefully deployed red accents – on the central chronograph hand and the second counter at 6 o’clock – echo the historic colour signatures that have defined the Monza across generations. White lacquered hour and minute hands treated with Super-LumiNova ensure the watch can be read in any environment, and the angled date aperture at 9 o’clock is a nice bit of architecture that carries over from the modern Monza family. Framing it all is a black flange that combines both a tachymeter and pulsometer scale – a nod to the functional origins of the chronograph, and a detail enthusiasts will appreciate.
The movement is the COSC-certified manufacture Calibre TH20-12, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback – which is itself finished in titanium grade 2 with DLC coating and engraved with the individual limited edition number (XXX/500). The headline complication is the flyback function: rather than the three-button stop-reset-restart sequence of a conventional chronograph, a single push instantly resets and restarts the timing mechanism. In a motorsport context, where measuring consecutive lap intervals is the whole point, it’s not merely a technical flourish – it’s the right complication for the watch.
A black perforated calfskin strap with contrasting red stitching finishes the package, nodding to the world of classic motor racing with exactly the right amount of subtlety.
TAG Heuer’s recent output has been strong and varied – the Carrera Glassbox family has gone from strength to strength, the brand’s return as F1’s official timekeeper in 2025 renewed a sense of genuine motorsport legitimacy, and limited editions like the fragment Carrera collab have proven the Maison can execute collector-grade pieces with real panache. The Monza Flyback fits squarely in that upper tier. It doesn’t reinvent the formula, but it doesn’t need to – what it does is honour fifty years of history with a watch that is materially and mechanically worthy of the occasion. With 500 pieces being produced, it is limited enough to feel a sense of scarcity, but not too limited that it will leave TAG Heuer and racing fans around the world in the dust.
