TAG Heuer is undoubtedly in its era of refinement and elevation. Over the last few years, we’ve seen evolutions and upgrades for its core collections, with the Carrera Chronograph entering its ‘Glassbox’ era, the Carrera upgraded with more advanced movements, and the Monaco exploring new materials and higher complications. We have even seen TAG living up to the Avant-Garde in its name with pieces like the Plasma Diamant d’Avant-Garde. However you feel about TAG Heuer, its strengths and weaknesses, one thing is irrefutable: TAG Heuer is the horological king of motorsports. And its latest limited edition launch enlists the help of its conglomerate sibling, La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, to push its motorsport expression even further with a design that pays tribute to 12-cylinder engines.
The new TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12 and its new TH84-00 movement build upon the Louis Vuitton Spin Time framework to create a mechanically complex, yet visually clear, motorsport tribute. It replaces the dial layout we are more accustomed to for a Monaco with twelve rotating pistons that tell the time like a V12 engine fires: in sequence, with theatre, with mechanical drama you can actually watch unfold on your wrist. Each of the 12 pistons is precisely shaped and detailed, with sandblasted and brushed surfaces and black lacquer fillings for each of the Arabic numerals.
“As the minute hand completes a full rotation around the dial, a precise sequence unfolds,” TAG Heuer explains. “One piston returns to its initial stance, while the following one executes a precise 90-degree turn, unveiling a previously concealed facet indicating the hour, resulting in a dynamic display of time.”
Sensible for a high-octane design with a modern feel, the 40mm case is forged in lightweight and comfortable grade-5 titanium, satin-brushed throughout to allow the openworked dial to be the undisputed star of the show. The 30-metre water-resistant case is paired with a black rubber strap, with textile embossing, red hand-stitching, and a grade-5 titanium folding clasp to match the case.
As someone who is not really a car guy, instead a NYC-native who has yet to get his driver’s license, this Monaco is not really the design that revs my engine the most. It is also quite limited and higher in price at US$87,000, so it is certainly not a Monaco for everybody. Who it is really for are those around the world who love high-end cars, horology, TAG Heuer, motorsport, and the legendary Monaco design. In some respects, it feels weird seeing a Monaco that is not a chronograph. However, the trade of a chronograph for a highly complex jump-hour movement that really drives home a motorsport sensibility definitely works within the context of the model and brand.
Purists may nitpick, but I am all for TAG Heuer pushing the envelope and exploring novel ways to incorporate motorsport elements into its watches. I am also all for conglomerates like LVMH leveraging shared technology between their brands to create such ultimate expressions of their designs.
