TAG Heuer & fragment return with their first collaboration in 5 years

  • Japanese streetwear label fragment design teams up with TAG Heuer again after a five-year hiatus to bring its twist to the Glassbox era of Carrera Chronograph.
  • This marks the third collaboration between TAG Heuer and fragment after the Carrera Chronograph (2018) and Formula 1 Chronograph (2020).
  • It’s limited to 500 pieces and priced at CHF 8,150, and, spoiler alert, TAG Heuer x fragment watches are quite collectable.

Some have accused the watch industry of leaning too hard on new limited editions and collaborations, but how would these naysayers feel about the return of two collaborative partners after a five-year hiatus? The two previous TAG Heuer x fragment collaboration watches have each proven to be stylish, popular and strong performers on the secondary market. Today, a third collab makes its debut – and it might just be the best one yet.

The duo’s 2020 collaboration was a Formula 1 chronograph, but in 2018, fragment brought its sense of design to the previous generation of Carrera Chronograph. With the latest Glassbox era of Carrera Chronograph proving to be stronger than ever, it makes sense that fragment’s creative mastermind, noted fashion designer and multi-hyphenate Hiroshi Fujiwara, would want to revisit the iconic chronograph for a second round. We once again have a clean black dial, a matte black opalin to be precise here, but the manner in which the fragment iconography is incorporated is more subtle.

Though the ‘fragment’ text at the 6 o’clock portion of the dial reveals this is more than your standard Carrera Chronograph, it becomes most clear on the first and eleventh day of each month when the date disc replaces the two aforementioned numerals with the double lightning bolt fragment logo. The last noticeable dial switch-up is the manner in which Fujiwara has utilised the sloped outer perimeter of the tachymeter scale that is such a signature of the Carrera Glassbox, giving it a fashionable ghost-like appearance with a white outer ring with slightly darker numerals for the tachymetre scale to offer a degree of legibility.

Fujiwara has also brought a twist to TAG’s recently introduced 7-row bracelet for the Carrera, electing to blacken the central link for added visual flair that ties the dial scheme to the bracelet. It is a nice twist that makes this limited edition of 500 pieces feel that much more limited. Of course, on the exhibition caseback that offers a window into the TH20-00 80-hour in-house automatic chronograph movement, you will find the fragment logo etched on the sapphire crystal in a non-obstructive way – merely covering the central bearings of the winding rotor.

In some respects, the new Carrera Chronograph x fragment Limited Edition feels like a reedition of the 2018 Carrera Chronograph x fragment Limited Edition, but it’s in the subtle nuances of how Fujiwara has reinterpreted elements introduced in the Glassbox framework of Carrera Chronograph design, plus the twist on the bracelet, that utlimately offers what I believe to be the best of the fragment x TAG Heuer limited editions yet.
